This is an irritating book, even if you yourself are fairly liberal and conservationist in your outlook. The author is a conventional liberal with conventional liberal notions like:(1) Cutting down trees is inherently evil. Apparently, they don't grow back in the author's view, so we should just declare all of the west coast one big national park or something.(2) Native cultures are noble and superior to debased white culture.(3) Capitalism and economic development are evil.Whether you agree with these propositions or disagree with them is actually irrelevant to whether you will enjoy this book. Because the author seems intent on beating these views into every nook and cranny of the book so thoroughly that he can't seem to write more than a couple of paragraphs without repeating them or alluding to them in some way. So a subject that I was looking forward to reading about becomes largely one endless, hectoring, depressing lecture. If you want to know everything that is WRONG with the Pacific Northwest in agonizing detail, by all means pick this up. Otherwise, steer clear.I am a fairly liberal, pro-conservation guy who gives money to Greenpeace, and even I found this book absurd. So don't think this is just some angry Republican being grumpy about confronting uncomfortable truths. This book should be pretty annoying to almost everybody regardless of their politics.

Having lived in the Pacific Northwest the vast majority of my life, reading this book I realized just how ignorant I am about its history. Timothy Egan takes you on a grand tour of the region, using characters you have likely never heard of. That’s just one element of Egan’s magical gift.I have read 5 Egan books in the last ten days – have one on the shelf and another in my cart on-line. That’ll mean I’ve read ALL of Egan’s books in two weeks. I read approximately 100 books a year. I have for decades. I have NEVER read consecutive volumes of one author’s books – one after another – until I ran into Egan.Reading Egan is an adventure – a particularly satisfying and unique one. I have few favorite authors. Egan is now in my top 3. PERIOD. His work is just than damn good…better than good…it’s hard to put into words my appreciation for this man’s literary talent. No writer knows the Pacific Northwest outdoors and its interplay with history like writer and New York Times columnists Timothy Egan. His accounts of the environment and especially the weather of the region are based on countless forays into the woods, along the rivers, and on the mountains with occasional stops in the cities. The Good Rain is one of Egan’s early volumes, written 25 years ago. Today the regional environment is more appreciated and protected even as it is more stressed and threatened. In this time of climate warming – currently with a severe drought in the Pacific Northwest – an appreciation of rain is even more pronounced and more prevalent.The subtitle here is “Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest,” and it is apt. Egan presents much of the region’s history as it pertains to the outdoors, and he expertly describes Native Americans’ relation to their surroundings and the disruptive, damaging projects of the European and American settlers. Egan gives special notice to the region’s rivers. But there’s no stern harangue about plundering of outdoor treasures. His account of restoring the Willamette River in Oregon reveals the light touch his writing takes. He tells the impact of Oregon’s governor Tom McCall in the late 1960s who was determined to clean up the river. “Under McCall, a zealot with a droll sense of humor and an unshakable sense of destiny, the Willamette was treated like the main artery of the Pope.” And McCall was successful with a vastly cleaner river in the 1970s. I grew up in the NW. I was an early climber. When I started buying at the REI it was a closet in the back of an Insurance office in downtown Seattle.Pet Schoeing and Becky would find a route on some of the Alpine Lakes peaks and we would be the next to follow.I also really liked the history of the Olympic Peninsula area. A lot of information I didn't know.I recommend this book to all people moving into the NW. It will really give you a good feel for the NW part of washington.

As a life long resident of the Pacific Northwest, I have yet to see many of the areas in the state of Washington. I may not see all I want to see in my lifetime, but reading this book gets me itching to go explore. Not only is it a geography book, but a history one as well. Extremely well written with picturesque and colorful language. It's like watching a video by National Geographic! Excellent book!

Excellent historical and climate/environmental view of several northwest US locations. As a 50 year resident of the northwest who has visited each of the discussed locations, I gained several new insights and a better understanding of familiar places. Good history story from a unique and fresh perspective. Well written and enjoyable to read.

This was a major improvement after the book, "Memnoch the Devil." It's actually narrated in the first person by two different characters, the first is Jonathan who was chosen by Azriel to write his story. A good portion of the book is an exchange between these two characters which works wonderfully and flows very well. Once we reach the point in Azriel's story which takes part in modern day the book becomes difficult to read for long periods at a time, almost mimicking the conflicting feelings Azriel has for Gregory Belkin and their interactions. It has nothing to do with any of the other books in any of her series, which makes a nice break if you are trying to read her entire vampire and witch collection at one time. Jonathan does not have a big part in the book as the book is titled Servant of the Bones it is entirely about him with a small portion dealing with Jonathan

This book is completely cerebral! You must stay with the story to understand it. Anne did wonderful research on the ancient middle eastern religions and the Jewish Hasidim. As always, lush imagary. The central character is a beautiful and tragic young Jewish exile who is tricked into a nightmare situation from which he cannot escape. You may just find yourself falling in love with his fictional character. The Jewish author with whom he is sharing his story is fascinating in his own right. This tale isn't peopled with unnecassary characters or mundane scenes. There is some erotica near the end of the story, but unlike some of the other tales she tells, it does not dominate the plot line. A very vivid mystery of biblical status. If you are at all interested in a good piece of literature, you will find this book won't disappoint you, but it is a really quick read. Definately on my top 10 list of all time great works by Anne!

If you liked Anne Rice's "Mummy" or Vampire books you'll like this one too. Typical Anne Rice immortal being with super natural powers who struggles with good vs. evil inner conflicts. There's also the requisite historic and exotic locales woven into a fascinating story. Anne Rice is a great story teller who's tales are almost believable.

This is one of my favorite books by Anne Rice. But if you are looking for vampires, you will find none here. You will meet Azriel, who is an absolute delight.

An absolutely wonderful book. Just as with her book the Mummy, we read our first copy 'til it fell apart. We LOVE this book!!

What's not to love in an Anne Rice book? I enjoy her books greatly. This one is good in being a stand alone book.

Gripping and passionate. I wish she would write more about Azriel

A truly inspirational book I will read many times. Like most of Anne Rices books.

One of my friends ordered it special cause it came out in 1964 so we waited for it by the mail-box daily till it came . When it did, as a group we used it to navigate through the difficult places the book suggest. Seeing the whole structure of the material world on a micro / macro level. Understanding the structure of the mind/brain/personality process. We discovered the clear light and used to say when we saw each other weeks after we took trips together "Are you still where it's at". We could maintain 2-3 days of total awareness of the effects of the L.S.D. At this time that we took it, It was still Legal. It became Illegal in 1966 at which time we stopped taking it. (disclaimer) Ha! Ha!. The book was responsible for changing the way we view the world and our selves. We did loose our ego's. We did experience most of the levels in the book as real to us. Nothing short of a full on Eastern Mystical experience. The real thing only from a drug and an instruction book. With out the book we had no way of labeling our experiences so as to identify them as they happened. We missed a lot without the book, although the intensity of the experience was self explanatory with out it.Today My feet are on the ground but still I study and practice being in the "Now" Echart Tolle is a good source for today on getting there on the Nach! I dont recommend use of any drugs or mind altering substances because with drugs you come down and forget how you got there. But today we have many books and practices that get you there for real and forever. Remember this is a life time work to be done by everybody regardless of your religion or belief but without Drugs. The bottom line is to see and diminish the ego domination of you personality and see and feel your pure, innocent nature as a human being. I'm 70 years old now. I took my first L.S.D trip when I was 18. That experience changed the way I saw the whole system so I had problems adjusting to society and life in general. But today I have a good handle on whats real and what's not real. Remember It's your mind that interprets everything.Your mind is all stored past memory. So you see through the past. When you loose the ego the past dies' so whats left is "what is". Thats where you start to understand whats true and whats false in life. Good Luck, R

"Psychedelic", I believe it says in the book, is not restricted to drug induced experiences, and drugs are not the only way to suppress and/or kill the ego.This book is not simply a manual for trippers, hence what I assume is the confusion I see expressed in these reviews. Though it might be thought of, or even marketed that way, that is simply too narrow a view of this work. It is in fact, a manual for the Tibetan Book of the Dead (aka The Tibetan Book of Coming Forth by Day). I see no negative comments here by anyone claiming to have read that book. I definitely suggest read it, and even Yents' other books, before attempting to fully grasp this one.🙏

The psychedelic experience is one that is overwhelmingly and incorrectly associated with other drug experiences, and this book, whether it means to or not, does a great job of explaining that the psychedelic experience is more of a religious experience than plain drug experience.It's an irrefutable fact that every one of the world's major religions and wisdom traditions had a psychedelic drug ritual attached to them, even Christianity has his halos based on mushroom caps and art containing mushrooms everywhere. Timothy Leary went so deep with studying various ancient wisdom traditions to understand or explain or better navigate the psychedelic experience and this book does that 'beautifully.' The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Buddhism as a whole go brilliantly hand in hand with psychedelics, as if they were made for each other, but the inexperienced would need a little guidance to link some of the concepts with one to the concepts of the other, and that's what this book seeks to do. In my deeply experienced opinion, it succeeds 'gloriously.'

Maps came in handy. If you don't know Paris, and you want to see things and travel via public transportation, you are going to need maps. Lightweight and useful.

Information while basic was useful. Maps were so small they were almost useless.

Small enough to fit in my small purse. The map's locations of Tourist Information Centers, where we purchased our museum passes, saved us hours of time from waiting in the ticket line at the Louve. This was a very helpful guide on so many levels. I used the pop-out map about six times a day!

It was a gift and the recipients stated that it was helpful.

Love the InsideOut books; wish they covered more cities and were updated more often.

While I think this is one of the best little guide books, I am disappointed that it no longer comes with the pen nor the compass. I found both of those to be extremely helpful. I would not have lent out my old insideout guide had I known that they were going to discontinue those amenities. I do find the pop out maps to be the most useful part of this guide.

Very good, concise information. Good size (small) book to have it with you on the streets. You will not know you have it in your pocket until you need it.

About the Author

Dana Backman works for the SETI Institute of Mountain View, California, as director of outreach for the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) mission at NASA's Ames Research Center. I bought this book as a compliment to Feng Shui Your Life: Second Edition by Jayme Barret since we are relocating again, to a townhome this time (a hop, skip and a jump to work). Boy is this book a complete anti-thesis, polar opposite or [insert-whatever-you-want-to-use-to-describe-being-the-complete-opposite-phrase-here] of Jayme's book. Where as Feng Shui Your Life: Second Edition engages the practice in an entirely new-age perspective and emphasizing on feng-shui "cures" (i.e. charms, talisman, luck, symbolism, etc.) and the bagua map, i.e. what I came to understand as the "Black Hat Tantric Buddhism" school of feng-shui, or BTB, McCandless engages the art of feng-shui from a more traditional and pragmatic approach: the study of the environment and how it affects people. No bagua maps (although she incorporates the traditional feng-shui compass in interior arrangements in later chapters) or new-age crapola. In fact, McCandless starts out by dispelling feng-shui "cures", associated with BTB feng-shui.I like the fact that this book is extremely easy to read and straight to the point. I enjoy McCandless' pragmatic style and her candidness at dispelling the BS (i.e. new-age crapola, such as hanging crystal spheres [which Jayme heavily emphasizes], mirrors and other attributes) that is associated with modern/Westernized BTB branch of feng-shui. It dives into the history of feng-shui and engages the art of feng-shui from a common sense approach:-- You design your environment so that it makes you feel secure and happy. If you are happy, then it will follow you through every other aspect of your day/life. --Have you ever awaken to an incredible mood that followed you to work or school? So incredible that it rubs off to your colleagues (you'd greet folks when you normally don't and being totally out of character)? So incredible that your body is tingling with euphoria stemming from this great mood? This book strive to induce that feeling through environmental conscientiousness, arrangements and engagements.That is it! No redirecting mystical energy, increasing luck or barraging your living quarters with lame feng-shui marketing trinkets to "energize" the room. There are also short segments in every chapter on dispelling common feng-shui misconception and myths. The author goes into lengthy detail explaining their probable origin and why they are myths and should be regarded as no more than such; take a look at the following examples McCandless dispels:1.) "It is bad to live at the end of a long narrow street or cul-de-sac because the energy will surge into your household like a sharp arrow, negatively impacting your life." Jayme mentioned this in her book with "cures", such as placing a gazing ball near the entrance door to "deflect" the surging negative energy flow and counteract its effects)2.) "It is good luck to paint your front entrance door red" (funny in Jayme's book, there's a picture depicting a bright red wooden door). As I read through these mythbusters, I couldn't help but wonder if the author is taking direct aim at Jayme's book because a large chunk of the "cures" suggested in Feng Shui Your Life: Second Edition are dispelled by McCandless.3.) "If your wealth/prosperity energy center is a bathroom, you could be flushing or draining your wealth away!" Jayme's cure solution to: add a water fountain running 24/7, hang a crystal ball, add a night light and leave it on 24/7 or my personal favorite, add plants - they can be artificial or real! How can an artificial man-made plant energize ANYTHING? If anything, it can add appeal to the visual sensors if arranged correctly, but energize? Come'on now, you trying to sell me snake oil? McCandless said that the bathroom is just like any room. As long as it is kept clean and tidy, it will be welcoming - and that's all that matter. If you feel welcomed, you will be affected positively in your subconscience. McCandless kicks it up a notch and finishes this mythbuster segment with: the only way to "drain your wealth away" is to literally empty your wallet into the toilet bowl and flush it down the drain, lol.Don't get me wrong, Feng Shui Your Life: Second Edition is a great book on reducing clutter and for ideas on how to decorate different areas of your home that creates the feeling of camaraderie or catharsis, which is feng-shui in itself. It is also filled with colorful photos cover to cover, a stark contrast to McCandless' book which is entirely black and white with crappy illustrations laden with JPEG artifacts. Jayme's approach to feng-shui is different and her new-age perspective isn't really for me. You can read my review on it for more details.

There are at least a dozen books about feng shui on my bookcase. Each expert has their own opinions and to be honest I was ready to give up because the "must dos" were different and contradicted each other. Then I found Cathleen McCandless' book and wow what a difference! The explanations of why the remedies of the past were used and how they may not be applicable to modern western living were such a help. Her common sense approach is balanced by the obvious respect that she has for the practice and history of feng shui. It's well written and easy to follow. There are some immediate - inexpensive suggestions that can help you get started making positive changes right away. If you were like me, interested but confused, I would highly recommend giving Feng Shui That Makes Sense a chance.

This book is a must read for anyone remotely interested in feng shui. I've done years of informal research into feng shui because its practicality fascinates me. This is by far my favorite book on the subject. There is a lot of misinformation out there that converts well-meaning people into superstitious and paranoid interior decorators (including me at some points, unfortunately). The effect is counterintuitive to what feng shui is all about, which is living in an environment that optimizes your health. This book addresses all the myths that I've come across and re-grounds you in the common sense and natural science that the practice is based on. It also puts feng shui practices into historical context, bringing it to life in important ways. Lastly the author gives really interesting, incredible (and sometimes comical) examples from her experience as a consultant. In addition to helping me nurture my home with more confidence, I can now better explain some of my interior decorating decisions to my husband in a way that appeals to his reason. Two thumbs up!

So this may be a long review so I apologize because I don't often feel so moved to review a book as I do this one. Over the years my husband and I have lived in many rentals across the country due to frequent moving and a horrible home buying experience in our 20's. Well faced with yet another move and my desire to no longer live in condos, apartments or townhouses (shared walls and bad neighbors are to common for us) we decided to try purchasing again.I have read many books in the past on Feng Shui and Vaatsu in desperate attempts to create balance when our options were limited and have to say I gave up on it a decade ago. Home buying terrifies me after our one and only home purchase turned into a 15 year nightmare of which we only lived in the house 3 years of so I decided to once again look at ways to try and make sure we purchased a comfortable home.This book was completely different. She doesn't focus on placing fountains and knick knacks all over the place to bring good luck which I appreciated immediately because I cannot stand to much clutter. Her approach is about flow and comfort. There is no hanging crystals because the front door faces the wrong direction or crazy math formulas to find out my bedroom needs to be in the south west corner because lets face it when buying a home not everything can be in the perfect location and direction for my personal horoscope (yes I have read books like that).She explains very clearly about balancing yin and yang in a way that is not only easy to understand but easy to achieve. She dispels a lot of superstitions and myths and gives more rational explanations as to why you should avoid something's and how to change things in inexpensive ways. I wish she had more books on the market than just this one because I would read them all.
