This is an irritating book, even if you yourself are fairly liberal and conservationist in your outlook. The author is a conventional liberal with conventional liberal notions like:(1) Cutting down trees is inherently evil. Apparently, they don't grow back in the author's view, so we should just declare all of the west coast one big national park or something.(2) Native cultures are noble and superior to debased white culture.(3) Capitalism and economic development are evil.Whether you agree with these propositions or disagree with them is actually irrelevant to whether you will enjoy this book. Because the author seems intent on beating these views into every nook and cranny of the book so thoroughly that he can't seem to write more than a couple of paragraphs without repeating them or alluding to them in some way. So a subject that I was looking forward to reading about becomes largely one endless, hectoring, depressing lecture. If you want to know everything that is WRONG with the Pacific Northwest in agonizing detail, by all means pick this up. Otherwise, steer clear.I am a fairly liberal, pro-conservation guy who gives money to Greenpeace, and even I found this book absurd. So don't think this is just some angry Republican being grumpy about confronting uncomfortable truths. This book should be pretty annoying to almost everybody regardless of their politics.
Having lived in the Pacific Northwest the vast majority of my life, reading this book I realized just how ignorant I am about its history. Timothy Egan takes you on a grand tour of the region, using characters you have likely never heard of. That’s just one element of Egan’s magical gift.I have read 5 Egan books in the last ten days – have one on the shelf and another in my cart on-line. That’ll mean I’ve read ALL of Egan’s books in two weeks. I read approximately 100 books a year. I have for decades. I have NEVER read consecutive volumes of one author’s books – one after another – until I ran into Egan.Reading Egan is an adventure – a particularly satisfying and unique one. I have few favorite authors. Egan is now in my top 3. PERIOD. His work is just than damn good…better than good…it’s hard to put into words my appreciation for this man’s literary talent. No writer knows the Pacific Northwest outdoors and its interplay with history like writer and New York Times columnists Timothy Egan. His accounts of the environment and especially the weather of the region are based on countless forays into the woods, along the rivers, and on the mountains with occasional stops in the cities. The Good Rain is one of Egan’s early volumes, written 25 years ago. Today the regional environment is more appreciated and protected even as it is more stressed and threatened. In this time of climate warming – currently with a severe drought in the Pacific Northwest – an appreciation of rain is even more pronounced and more prevalent.The subtitle here is “Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest,†and it is apt. Egan presents much of the region’s history as it pertains to the outdoors, and he expertly describes Native Americans’ relation to their surroundings and the disruptive, damaging projects of the European and American settlers. Egan gives special notice to the region’s rivers. But there’s no stern harangue about plundering of outdoor treasures. His account of restoring the Willamette River in Oregon reveals the light touch his writing takes. He tells the impact of Oregon’s governor Tom McCall in the late 1960s who was determined to clean up the river. “Under McCall, a zealot with a droll sense of humor and an unshakable sense of destiny, the Willamette was treated like the main artery of the Pope.†And McCall was successful with a vastly cleaner river in the 1970s. I grew up in the NW. I was an early climber. When I started buying at the REI it was a closet in the back of an Insurance office in downtown Seattle.Pet Schoeing and Becky would find a route on some of the Alpine Lakes peaks and we would be the next to follow.I also really liked the history of the Olympic Peninsula area. A lot of information I didn't know.I recommend this book to all people moving into the NW. It will really give you a good feel for the NW part of washington.
As a life long resident of the Pacific Northwest, I have yet to see many of the areas in the state of Washington. I may not see all I want to see in my lifetime, but reading this book gets me itching to go explore. Not only is it a geography book, but a history one as well. Extremely well written with picturesque and colorful language. It's like watching a video by National Geographic! Excellent book!
Excellent historical and climate/environmental view of several northwest US locations. As a 50 year resident of the northwest who has visited each of the discussed locations, I gained several new insights and a better understanding of familiar places. Good history story from a unique and fresh perspective. Well written and enjoyable to read.
