It's to technical. I thought it would be about the process of doing an RCOH. It focused more on the cost.

This is coming from a some what knowledgable 11 year old girl, but I absolutely LOVED this book. I have always been fascinated with WWII and I finally found another book about it. I really like how it explains the capture of the less famous, but much more evil of a person, Adolf Eichmann, who I never knew existed. I also cannot believe how he stayed in hiding for 15 years until his capture. This book was a SMASHING read. I thought there was not a single part of the book that was boring or not interesting. I kept turning the pages on my iPad to see what would happen next. I can tell you, I really enjoyed this book and if you are interested in WWII and want a good book to read about it, choose this book to read. I highly recommend this book! I would also like to say thank you for writing it!:)

Though this was a book written for the young adult market, I was, nonetheless, riveted by this gripping account of the capture of Adolf Eichmann, one of the most notorious Nazis. Prior to reading this book, I had only known that he had been captured in Argentina by Israeli agents. I had not realized the intricacies of the plan and number of pieces that had to fall in place for the plan to succeed. For years, Adolf Eichmann had been off the radar. Despite circulation of his photograph and the efforts of Simon Weisenthal, one of the most well known of the Nazi hunters, it was if Adolf Eichmann had disappeared off the face of the earth. Then, around 1953, information started coming in that Eichmann might be found in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a bastion for Nazis who had fled Germany after the war. Thanks to a resourceful young woman living in Argentina, more precise information was able to be developed. From there, a daring plan for his capture was hatched. This is an exciting account of that capture and all that it entailed. Bringing Adolf Eichmann to justice sent a strong message that reverberated throughout the world. The notorious Nazi, known for bringing about the extermination of so many, would soon discover the price that he would pay for his crimes against humanity. This book is illustrated with many archival photos that enhance the account of what transpired.

I turned to this book in the middle of reading various Daniel Silva spy novels, including one involving the Holocaust. My wife and I are currently addicted to Silva, and I figured that The Nazi Hunters would be a break that would provide interest but not the sort of page-turning, late-at-night narrative that Silva's novels always give. Wrong! This book is gripping from start to finish. It is very well researched, and told with a storyteller's gift for narrative; I couldn't put it down. Bascomb brilliantly relates the details of the hunt for Eichmann, and the meticulous planning that went into his capture and secret smuggling out of Argentina.Eichmann was a monster, though of course he maintained till the last that tired defense: that in arranging the capture and transportation to death of millions of innocent people he was "just following orders". It is remarkable that the men involved in bringing him to justice - most of whom had lost family in the Holocaust - resisted what must have been the strong temptation to kill him, and instead gave him the kind of trial that he never permitted his victims.I've read a lot of Holocaust literature, and this is a worthy addition to the best of that genre.

Amazing story of the hunt for Eichmann and the serendipitous manner in which he was discovered in Argentina. Aside from the unique nature of his capture and removal to Israel is the determination of Ben Gurion to try Eichmann as a matter of a teaching experience for the world. Well worth reading together with another book, The Hunting of Eichmann.

At first, I just chose this book because I needed to read a non-fiction book for my class project, but after reading the first chapter, I was instantly hooked. I love how this book is mainly about events that occurred after World War II because I never learned too much about what happened post WWII.

I found it exciting, riveting and educational. I also feel that every person that learns more about the atrocities will help prevent something this horrible from happening again.

This book had my attention from start to finish. Were it not for work, I would've completed it in one sitting. Captivating and very informative. Above all, it has shed a very bright light on the horrors of post-war criminals who did not realize that the long arm of lady justice extends beyond the borders of Nazi Germany. I would recommend this book to anyone that has an understanding of the holocaust events. Even if you don't, this book will give the reader enough background information.

As someone who loves history I felt his very difficult subject was handled very well especially if sharing with younger readers such as middle or high school age kids. Well done!

#173,994 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

What can I say? This is a classic. I am so glad I read this before my 30th birthday and before the 2016 US presidential election. It really puts things into perspective. No matter how great I think America is and how much of a superpower it is it does not compare to how long and how great the Roman Empire was. I cannot even begin to imagine how the citizens of Rome must have felt when they heard the news that the barbarian tribes from the north took over Rome in 410AD. This apologetic work from Augustine of Hippo does not only argue that the City of God will overcome the City of Man one day but also teaches one how to engage critics and persuasively convince the reader. Augustine was a Roman through and through but His love for the true Eternal City was always more important. This book gave me an appreciation for how God always has a 'pilgrim people' that He has predestined to fight the good fight. If you are looking for a biblical theology of the City of God throughout all of Scripture then this is a great read for you. It will also give you an appreciation for how the current trend of 'gospel-centered' is not anything new but really old and Augustine was a master at making Christ-centered connections from the OT.For example, on page 971 Augustine skillfully writes, "This is why, as the Lord carried his cross, so Isaac himself carried to the place of sacrifice the wood on which he too was to be placed. Moreover, after the father had been prevented from striking his son, since it was not right that Isaac should be slain, who was the ram whose immolation completed the sacrifice by blood of symbolic significance? Bear in mind that when Abraham saw the ram it was caught by the horns in a thicket. Who, then, was symbolized by that ram but Jesus, crowned with Jewish thorns150 before he was offered in sacrifice? The book is filled with little nuggets all throughout. Couldn't recommend it more!

This negative review has nothing to do with St. Augustine's powers of logic or the translation. This negative review has everything to do with the Xist Classic kindle edition I purchased. This edition does not contain the full 22 books of "The City of God," but rather cuts Augustine off midthought at the end of book 13. Not delivering the full content of the book as described is unacceptable.

This is a review of the Kindle edition -- that's why the rating is 3 stars. The book proper gets 5 stars from me, but the Kindle version gets 1.Why? Because it's obviously been scanned in from a printed edition and then only tidied perfunctorily. Maybe one page in eight has at least one scanner error (they tend to clump), and running a spell-check program would have caught a good fraction of them. A bored intern who read every word of the text would have caught almost all. It's amusing to read about Flatonists rather than Platonists, and it keeps me on my toes to have "the" replace "die" much of the time, but it soon gets tiresome.Penguin Classics has stopped caring about their readers. It's pathetic. This Kindle edition is roughly as expensive as the paperback, at least here, and they can't even be bothered to run a spell-checker program on it, let alone pay anyone to proofread it.If you simply must have this translation in Kindle format, you're stuck with this. I'm certain that Penguin Classics will do nothing to fix these problems.

Augustine’s City of God is classic of Western literature, theology, philosophy, and cultural criticism. It is a work that, alone, is almost half of Aristotle’s surviving corpus (and Augustine’s surviving corpus is the largest corpus of any Western author, and there are plenty of works of Augustine’s that have been lost to us).The City of God, as most know, was written in the aftermath of the Sack of Rome by Alaric and the Visigoths. This sent shock waves throughout the Roman Empire – hitting Christians and Pagans alike. What we often forget too is that, while Christianity had been made the official state religion of the Roman Empire by Emperor Theodosius, “Paganism” still outnumbered Roman Christianity. Part of Augustine’s response was to counsel Christians whose faith was shaken by the events and traumatic experiences. The other part was Augustine’s response to the pagan critics – ensuring that the City of God would stand as one of the most comprehensive, and systematic, works of cultural criticism ever penned by a human.People in the English-speaking world, thanks to the Protestant Reformation, should re-read Augustine without the mediation of Luther or Calvin, and especially Calvin. Americans, in particular, should give Augustine’s work a read. America is often described as the New Rome, or the New Athens. Either way, America is the great superpower and is, in many ways, an empire of old. Although the notion of imperial soteriology has been greatly and grossly exaggerated, some Christians had begun to see the Roman Empire as an instrument of God’s salvific plans. In other words, God works through a nation to achieve his goals. Augustine vehemently opposes this view of seeing sacred history as tied to particular nations of men.Augustine is thoroughly Catholic. He is Catholic in his hermeneutics and he is Catholic in his ecclesiology. Which means he is Catholic in his ecclesiological hermeneutic which runs throughout the work. It was already common in the patristic period to read the Old Testament in a Christo-centric and ecclesiastic manner, so Augustine is no different when he comments upon how to read the ancient stories (but it is Augustine's authority that is so important). Unlike “fundamentalists” today, who see the OT stories as one of history, Augustine fits in the patristic tradition of allegorical hermeneutics. Yes, Augustine does believe in a literal Old Testament history (he had no reason to think otherwise) but that’s not what he is most concerned with. Instead, he is concerned with the truly “literal” (what we call today as allegorical) reading: The Old Testament stories are all prefigurations and signs of Christ and the Church. To give an example, in Book XV when he comments on the story of Cain and Abel Augustine doesn’t really care about Cain and Abel as fundamentalists would. Instead, he reads Cain and Abel as a story prefiguring Christ’s death and the Christian Church. Abel is like Christ, the good shepherd who is killed by humanity (archetypally represented by Cain). But Abel is also like the Church, the body of true life for even though Abel was physically killed it was Abel who spiritually lived on, while Cain embodies both physical and spiritual death. This is because, as Augustine tells us, Abel is like the City of God and Cain like the City of Man. Cain’s mark to wander and eventually found the first cities is also Augustine understanding those marked to be forever separated from Christ and his Church – and that city-life is tainted by the sin of fratricide leading to the perpetual lust for domination. But it is important to note, as Augustine does, God does not abandon the reprobate first (per Calvin's double predestination). It is the reprobate who abandon God – like Adam in the garden, or Cain just after murdering Abel, God appears and talks to them, offering a path to repent, but sinful man deflects the blame and doesn’t want to own their actions. Then, and only then, does God depart. (Hence Augustine's single predestination, for God knows who will choose him and forsake him, but he is still present with those who will forsake him until the moment of their forsaking -- whereas in Calvin God has already separated himself from the eternally damned before the beginning of time.)In reading the creation story of Genesis, Augustine not only emphasis the unity and equality between man and woman, “The woman, then, is the creation of God, just as the man; but her creation out of man emphasizes the idea of the unity between them” (XXII, 17), but it doesn’t stop there. Augustine reads the story of Adam and Eve in the same ecclesiastic hermeneutical lens: “And in the manner of that creation [the creation of Adam and Eve] there is, as I have said, a foreshadowing of Christ and his Church.”Those interested in the art of patristic hermeneutics, and especially ecclesiological hermeneutics, can be enriched by Augustine’s hermeneutic within the City of God. This is important for Americans, again, to realize the profundity of what Augustine is claiming (who influenced the Catholic tradition as a result): GOD HAS ALWAYS WORKED THROUGH HIS CHURCH! God has never actually worked through a “nation” but always his church. The Church is present at creation, it is present through the Flood (Noah’s Ark), it is present through the patriarchs and prophets, and it is present through the people of Israel before Christ’s crucifixion. There are no chosen nations, so to speak – all the nations, like earthly Jerusalem or Babylon, are destined to failure but the Church and the Church alone is chosen to endure to the end!But City of God is more than a work of philosophy, theology, and Biblical interpretation, it is among the greatest and most penetrating works of cultural criticism. Again, Americans should read, or reread, Augustine in light of this fact. Augustine does not spare from scrutiny and criticism all of the “sacred myths” of Rome. If Augustine were alive today, speaking of the city of man that is America, he would be equally critical of America’s founding myths: The City Upon the Hill, “The Last Best Hope,” and the veneration of the Founding Fathers and so on.Augustine doesn't spare the Roman city (archetypal of the earthly city of man) and its foundation of “love of self to the point of contempt of God” from any criticism. The city of man is the city where you can be whatever you want to be, the city where you can do whatever you want to do, the city where everything is permitted, which is the same as to say that nothing is important or sacred. The love of self is the love of nothingness and exhausts itself, always, in death and destruction.Augustine’s reading of the rape of Lucretia (Book I) and Romulus and Remus (Book XV) are just two of many examples of his withering cultural criticism. Lucretia, for those who don’t know Roman history and mythology, was a young and beautiful noblewoman who was raped by one of King Tarquin’s sons. Defiled by what one had done to her, rather than with her (as Augustine so acutely and deftly puts it), ultimately commits suicide though she had done nothing wrong. Lucretia’s tragedy is the tragedy of the city of man. Lucretia loved her self so much that after the rape she felt like she couldn’t love herself anymore and that if she went on living she would be scorned by Roman society. So she took her life. The love of self drove her to commit suicide. The sin of Lucretia’s suicide is just as much on Tarquin’s son, Lucretia herself, as it is on the Roman people as a whole. The irony is, Augustine sees, is that Lucretia had to die in order to win the praises of the city of man. Only through her death could she be loved again. Lucretia’s importance in Roman myth is that it was her death that galvanized the people to overthrow the Tuscan monarchy and establish the supposedly liberty-loving republic. In the story of Romulus and Remus Augustine parallels this with Cain and Abel. But Augustine, while noting the similarities, also highlights the difference. The murder of Remus by Romulus was because of love of self. Driven by competition and want for praise of self and all the glory of founding Rome to themselves, this meant that neither could share the praise and glory with one another. Hence, Romulus murdered Remus so as to win all of the laurels and honors of founding Rome for himself. Rome’s foundation is built upon the blood of a murdered family member. What one can’t afford to miss in this reading of the founding of Rome (again archetypal of the city of man) is that the city of man is always internally divided! The city of man is divided among itself in competition as the iteration of the libido dominadi, with competition being seen as the pathway to glory, honor, and fame, etc.Americans who like to breach bipartisanship and “unity” need to realize that the city of man, founded in its sin and lust for domination, enslaved by its culture of self-love and nothing more, cannot ever be united and unified. This is why earthly citizens need to transcend their citizenship to the only place of true unity: The Unity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is also part of Augustine’s criticism of Cicero – a man whom he greatly admired and was a fatherly intellectual figure of sorts (recall in the Confessions that Augustine credits Cicero with turning him away from atheism to belief in God, and in a way, Cicero is responsible for Augustine’s conversion to Christianity). Cicero’s great works: Republic and On Obligations, are very Christian in one sense, but deeply flawed in another. Cicero was right to see the need for justice and unity and strong moral character in order for a society to survive. But he was naïve to think Rome was ever that utopian republic that Cicero speaks of in some of his writings. How can a city founded on the love of self ever be united? Augustine is, although this is somewhat anachronistic, an ardent critic of “individualism” in the modern sense of the word. (Individualism, in Latin: individuum, means to be “indivisible”, i.e. bringing two together as one; just a fun etymological lesson the next time you consider what the implications of “individualism” are to philosophical anthropology.) The hope of nations is not a king, a president, or a congress -- it is the Church, of which Christ is the head of.The City of Rome, Augustine tells us through the stories of Romulus and Remus, Lucretia, and Aeneas, is founded on death and domination. Domination exhausting itself into death is really the only thing the city of man knows. Augustine's analysis and criticism of Roman myth, culture, and sacred literature is among the most penetrating and thoughtful cultural criticism any human writer has ever produced.Furthermore, in dealing with theology, Augustine – ever the Catholic – knows that God is Truth itself. (The idea of God as Truth itself is Catholic dogma.) In reading the narrative of the Fall and Sin in Genesis Augustine, again, deploys that allegorical hermeneutic. What did it mean for Adam and Eve to eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil? It was not to gain consciousness as existentialist theologians of the 20th century say (for man was already lonely in Genesis 2 which is why God made woman to make him whole: indivisible.) Augustine understands the Fall to be man’s attempt to decide for himself what is good and what is evil, in the false hope that being the “measure of all things” will bring him happiness.Augustine’s anthropology is defined by eudemonia. All humans seek happiness. Happiness is the end of human existence. This is why heaven, in Catholic doctrine, is the place of enduring and eternal happiness. Salvation is about happiness! But what is sin? Sin is misdirected desire at love and happiness according to Augustine. Humans do what they do out of a misguided belief that it will make them happy. The ultimate rebellion of man is thinking that he can simply claim his actions to be “good” so as to make him happy. That is what Augustine understands the first sin to be about; and that is ultimately what all sin is about. The City of God, Augustine tells us in Book XIV, is about living in union with the Truth of God's orderly creation. The city of man, by contrast, lives in falsity and darkness: It cares not about the Truth but only about the self as the measure of all things. Once more, thoughtful people today can see just how prescient Augustine was in understanding the ways of the city of man - the city that prefers falsity and ignorance in the never to be satisfied quest for happiness precisely because this quest, which places man (instead of God) at the center of all things perpetuates man's rebellion against nature itself. To live by God’s standard, Augustine says in Book XIV, is to live by nature’s standard – the standard of Truth itself. To live in union with the Truth, to live as God intended, is the only way to be truly happy. To live by the standard of man, is to live by the standard of falsity.Lastly, on the issue of image of God (imago Dei), Augustine (and Catholic doctrine affirms this) understands a crucial aspect of the imago Dei to mean that humans possess the gift of reason. Reason is what makes us like God. It is what separates humans from the rest of the created order. Animals may possess sense. They may be able to love in the way that animals can show affection. They may have simple thought processes. But animals do not possess rationality like humans do (e.g. ability to come to know the good and the true and live by that standard).Part of the Fall of Man, for Augustine, is man’s rejection of Reason. Since God is Reason and Reason is God (Logos theology) and Christ is the Wisdom itself (Christ as the Logos), the rejection of human reason in the garden story (by man wanting to decide for himself what is good and evil to bring about his joy), man actually rejected his own reason. Rather than use his reason to understand himself and the world, thereby living in union with the Truth of the created order whereby he would be happy, man rejects the rational order of creation and tries to define for himself what is good, what is evil, and who he is and who is not. This is what has led to the disordered affairs of body and soul in Christian anthropology. All desire seeks happiness and is, technically, good. But human reason is what guide desires to its end (finding bliss only in God). In rejecting human reason we become “fallen,” we become nothing less than brute animals who give into our impulses over and over again – only to be disappointed in the end.The idea of the Fall as the Fall of Human Reason is one of the reasons why actually literate scholars of Christian philosophy and theology (whether they are believing scholars or not) see the so-called “New Atheist” movement as nothing but a “secularization” of Christianity. Think about dunces like Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins who know almost nothing of religious hermeneutical traditions and their longstanding philosophies: That narrative that humans were once great and rational beings who have since fallen into darkness, ignorance, and superstition and now have to embrace the “light” of science and truth to lift themselves out of the pit of despair and darkness – guess where that narrative comes from? Yep, Christianity. For the world was void and left in darkness until the light of Christ gave it form in creation. The world was brilliant in its light and the people knew God before descending into darkness and ignorance (see Romans 1). Having rejected reason they have given themselves over to their passions and are left to wallow in despair (also see Romans 1). What saves man from this wretched state of ignorance and darkness? The “Light of Christ.” It’s the same story just retold.Augustine’s City of God is, without overstatement, a work that outshines most other works. There is no other work of antiquity, Christian, Greek, Jewish, or Roman, that is as comprehensive and systematic, as penetrating in its criticism, and as influential in its legacy, as Augustine’s City of God. It is a long and arduous read at times, this much is true. There are things that Augustine says that we now know not to be true. But that shouldn’t prevent anyone from reading one of the classic works of Western literature, philosophy, criticism, political philosophy, and theology. It is thought-provoking, tragic, ironic, and hopeful, all in one.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.I found the explanations thorough and easy to understand. Scales, chords - how they are built and how they relate, chord substitutions, modes, inversions and extensions all became more clear to me and will give the aspiring songwriter a wealth of ideas to explore and have fun with. Not that you need to be or want to be a songwriter to benefit. All players should know the information in this book.Being such a broad and deep subject, it's impossible to cover all of the aspects of theory in a single book but this little gem certainly has enough that anyone wanting to get a grasp of the more important/fundamental concepts of music theory will be well rewarded.I don't often rate anything 5 stars but Nicolas' book comes close to that standard for me.The (very minor) faults as I see it are an occasional mis-spelling and such, maybe auto spell raised it's ugly head once or twice.I want to re-read it and update this review as I didn't bother making any notes while reading but all in all I would highly recommend this book to anyone with no knowledge on the subject, or someone like me with a more intermediate understanding.I'm sure there are professional players who could gain a lot from reading it.I'll be looking at Carter's other books and hope their quality are as good as this one.I'm very impressed with this book and want to help encourage more from this author so I also paid for a copy. It's that good.

I am a moderately developed beginner and I found this book perfect. It explained the concepts clearly and built concept upon concept, easy to read and understand! Don't be afraid if you can count and know a b c d e f g of the alphabet you can learn this!

Just received my book. I started with the intro and did not stop until I was at page 30. I could not put the book down. So far, the book is everything a beginner or anyone else who needs to understand about music and music notation. It does get a bit more complicated as it goes, but it builds on what it already tells you. And it also tells you why you need music theory and how it works in a plain and simple manner. The only problem I find is that there are numerous names for the same thing, but he uses them all, so you learn them all. This is a book that really teaches and not one just for memorizing. I found it extremely helpful to have a piano or a paper keyboard to actually visualize what is being discussed. I just hope the rest of the book continues to be as interesting as the first 30 pages. Works even better when you LEARN in small doses. If you looking just to memorize, this book is not for you Thanks Nicolas Carter, I needed this.

This book advances too fast. This is not a book for a beginner. Picture a book that is titled Math: From beginner to expert. Now picture yourself picking up that book in textbook form and reading through it. Without solid fundamentals you will run out of gas shortly after the first chapter or two. You simply cannot absorb, learn, and retain the material as a beginner to progress through this book. I feel like the author is knowledgeable and experienced in music theory. Please do not think you will absorb the material as you read through the book. Now, if you are a musician or have been involved in music for a while, this may be your book. There is a ton of material. I applaud the author for writing and distributing the material, but bare in mind beginners should break down the material of music theory over several books.

I learned a lot from this book. I've been playing guitar for 15 years but never really knew what I was doing. I knew what sounded good, but not why. This book explains the why.One thing missing from this book is the LIMDAPL trick with the Circle of Fifths. CoF is covered, just not that technique which is a quick trick for finding the chords in a key. This book will be a great resource in the future for me to reference and was worth the few bucks.

I've been an on-again, off-again musician for quite some time. This book helped fill in some very important missing pieces of music theory for me.I think a I knew a lot of "how", but this book gave me a lot of "why"...if that makes sense. It is very well written and makes total sense of understanding more about actual "music" as opposed to just learning chords or how to play.It gave me some good knowledge on several "theories" I knew very little, if any thing, about.I felt this book helped me a great deal and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who does not want to spend YEARS learning music theory.

This book is the best explanation of music theory I've ever come across. Well worth it if you have gaps in your understanding of music.I'm a bass and lead guitarist that's played for years simply by ear. This year I bought several books and spent more time reading and learning than endless noodling on my guitar. This book turned out to be the one that changed the depth of my understanding. Of all the books and videos I've studied, this book and David Byrne's "How Music Works" are now my basis for a more complete understanding of music and my guitar playing.

It isn't what I expected. It is informative, but not to the expert level it claims. I have been studying music theory for several years, and I was going to use this to teach someone else, but now I have to go and find another book that will teach on the level that I was looking for. The book it definitely good for someone who has no basis of music theory and doesn't really want to put any real effort into composing, but for anyone who wants to compose, it is not the best choice in the world because it won't give you enough information to compose.

Let me be honest. I didn't read this word for word. I found myself overwhelmed with the science, and all. If you like to see why Dr. Barnard's diet to reverse diabetes and protect your mind and memory then this is your book. I was already convinced by his more recent book about reversing diabetes. But this particular book is more about Alzheimer's and other diseases of the brain, something I worry about because of grandmothers that died of that dreaded disease. So I took note and will be more aware metals that are in my diet. Luckily, I eat no meat or animal products (most of the time). I drink filtered water which should help. There are recipes in the back for those who are so inclined.Dr. Barnard keeps his explanations simple enough for the average person to to get through. He puts enough personal stories to keep it relevant. And I believe in his scientific research. This was a library Kindle book. I couldn't afford to buy my own. I did buy the Reverse Diabetes one after the borrow as I believe I will refer back to that one more often. Yay, for raw foods!

This is solid, usable, reasonable advice to achieve some important and specific goals, mainly maintaining your brain health as you age. This book discusses Alzheimer's, but also includes a discussion of how to avoid or reverse general cognitive decline and function so you can boost your memory and recall in just a few weeks. The information in the book is science based, well presented, and a pleasant and easy read. Dr. Barnard has a wonderful sense of humor and is able to explain complex subjects clearly without talking down to his reader. My mother had a stroke a few years ago. When she was recovering, she said her greatest fear was not the possible loss of mobility or discomfort/pain, but the possibility that she might lose her ability to read and work with knitting patterns.Last year I discovered Dr Barnard's other work and my mother and I went on the diet he outlines in his book 21-Day Kickstart Weight Loss 21-Day Weight Loss Kickstart: Boost Metabolism, Lower Cholesterol, and Dramatically Improve Your Health. I wrote a review of that here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R38EXNJ7X5IP63/ref=cm_srch_res_rtr_alt_1That diet worked miracles for our health simply by changing our diet. This book will help us extend the benefits of that lifestyle to work miracles for our brain health by showing us what to eat and what to avoid.Dr. Barnard writes in Power Foods about where brain toxins are found in our diet (interestingly, some of the toxins aren't necessarily things to avoid, but things that are a problem if we ingest either too much or too little, or even the wrong form of, for example, some metals). Dr. Barnard writes that just adding an ounce a day of seeds or nuts (for the proper form of vitamin E) will help reduce the risk of Alzheimers by 70%. Add berries, apples, pears, grapes, green leafy vegetables, and beans to your diet. Certainly things we can all do easily! Also, get rid of saturated fats. We all know we need to to this for heart health, and we need to do it for brain health as well. The book also describes brain exercises as well as the benefits of physical exercise and gives some specific things to do. Just a half hour three times a week can make a huge difference. And, very importantly for many of our aging population, what medications can be causing severe damage to our cognition. We found this to be true for my mother. We were able to get her off of her statins from adopting the 21-Day Kickstart diet, and that made a tremendous difference in her ability to think clearly and get rid of the "brain fog" that was following her around like the proverbial dark cloud. We have already made a lot of the changes he suggests in this book, but we are learning some new information to incorporate into our lifestyle, so I would recommend this book even for those who have read other of Dr. Barnard's books.Finding the root cause of cognitive problems can be quite a riddle to solve. I know it has been with my mother. In this book, Dr. Barnard walks you through the variety of things that can be a problem. One of the important things he noted is that not only can medications impact mental function, and the problems can add up as you add more medications. As we discovered in my family, the doctors did not even consider this while medicating my mother, and we had to do the detective work on medications ourselves. Some of the biggest culprits include sleep medications, statins (cholesterol lowering drugs), anti depressants, allergy meds/antihistamines, anxiety medications, pain killers, blood pressure medications, and antacids. Some of these you can just trade out for another kind, but others you really need to see a doctor about and have it managed properly. Dr. Barnard discusses this and tells you how to address the subject with your doctor. We also called our pharmacist and asked him to take a look at what my mother was taking before we saw the doctor so that we arrived to the appointment as informed as possible. In addition to medications, Dr Barnard discusses problems that can arise from other areas, such as food intolerances, depression, menopause (this was a big one for me!), thyroid problems, infections, migraines, cancer treatments, diabetes, and more. There are about 75 recipes in the book. I haven't tried them yet, but they are by the same chef who created the recipes in the Kickstart book, so I expect these to be equally easy to make and quite tasty. Examples of breakfasts include blueberry buckwheat pancakes with veggie sausage and cantaloupe; waffles with maple "bacon;" and breakfast wraps. Examples of lunches include veggie falafel with pita bread and a garden salad; easy colorful pasta salad over mixed greens; English muffin pizza; and a Tuscan wrap. Examples of dinners include red lentil soup with brown rice salad and steamed spinach, tacos with potatoes, swiss chard, and pinto beans with a spinach salad and mashed sweet potato; white bean chili with red rice, steamed spinach, and banana ice cream; and baked ziti with a rainbow salad and strawberry dressing, and warm apple cherry compote. The recipes seem very simple to make without an excessive amount of ingredients or anything excessively costly.I'd like to briefly address the criticism of Dr Barnard's plan that it can be too restrictive or drastic. It may seem that way with an initial look, but to me, loss of brain function and the prospect of losing mobility, cognition, emotions, and the toll that cognitive degeneration can cause on our families are what's really restrictive and drastic. Being bedridden or institutionalized for our later years is restrictive and drastic. Not remembering our children or being able to experience (or even remember) normal emotions is restrictive and drastic. And in light of those very real and unfortunately not uncommon possibilities, Dr Barnard's suggestions are neither restrictive or drastic.Speaking as part of a family that started to make some of these changes about a year ago, they aren't initially easy (it can definitely be hard to give up some of the food we have gotten used to), but if you work at it a little bit at a time and just keep trying, it becomes easier and easier as time goes by (the book has a special section to help deal with food cravings and why we have them). It took way less than a year for our taste buds to change and for this way of life to become not only easy for us, but enjoyable. This book adds to the vast amount of information already out there on the benefits of plant-based diets and is suitable for those who already consider themselves well-read on the subject--there is, of course, some information you will have already heard, but there is more information that is new and important and not available from other mainstream sources.Thank you for reading my review. This is an important topic and I know it's hard for some people to think about some of the changes Dr. Barnard suggests. But it's very do-able.

Dr. Neal Barnard, in his most recent book "Power Foods for the Brain," provides the reader with a lot of information about how to improve and maintain optimal brain health, and the entire body, as well. Dr Barnard suggests a plant-based diet such as fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes: "Foods can change your life." His advice stems from his life experience, from his practice as a physician and from his team's extensive research.A good example is illustrated on page 82. Benjamin Spock, MD a well-known pediatrician, in his later years suffered from chronic lung problems. Also, a bout of serious food poisoning left him with chronic neuropathy, weakening his legs. His doctors at Boston Medical Center couldn't do much for him. Only a drastic change in his diet, replacing meat and cheese with vegetables and whole grains alleviated his health problems. Then, learning from his own experience, Dr. Spock began to advocate for a healthful diet in his revised book "Baby and Child Care." Dr. Spock lived till the age of ninety-five.I am taking the liberty to share briefly my story. I am a Holocaust survivor. At the age of fifteen, the Nazis detained me in forced labor and concentration camps for a period of three years. I was beaten and starved. It left many physical and mental scars that never received any medical treatment there. I was liberated by the Russian army in May 1945. Their doctors gave me a thorough examination. I weighed eighty pounds, and they told me, "Sorry young man, your life span will not be long." I was 18 years old then; I am 87 now.For many years after the war I was a very sickly young man. The most troubling ailment had been my inability to digest common staples of food such as meat, dairy products, etc. My stomach rejected and ejected them. I had been seeking and getting medical treatments; different diagnoses were made and a variety of medications were prescribed which did not help much. A co-worker once suggested to me to adopt his vegetarian diet. I took his advice; at the age of 41, I became a strict vegetarian and a teetotaler. I don't claim to know what the best diet for everybody's health is, but having reached the age of 87 I have a valid reason to believe that a purely plant-based diet is good for a healthy body and mind.I learned a lot from POWER FOODS FOR THE BRAIN and I am highly recommending this easy-to-read book to anyone seeking to improve his/her health. I found many practical tips about specific foods and eating patterns to be very helpful in all aspects of health. I am grateful to Dr. Barnard for enhancing my knowledge with his knowledge. Advice from an MD lends special weight. This book merits being a reference book, and for me it will be.

Amazon.com Review

Beyond croaking, "Nevermore," what exactly do ravens do all day? Bernd Heinrich, biology professor at the University of Vermont and author of Ravens in Winter, has spent more than a decade learning the secrets of these giants of the crow family. He has observed startlingly complex activities among ravens, including strong pair-bonding, use of tools, elaborate vocal communication, and even play. Ravens are just plain smart, and we can see much of ourselves in their behavior. They seem to be affectionate, cranky, joyful, greedy, and competitive, just like us. And in Mind of the Raven, Heinrich makes no bones about attributing emotions and intellect to Corvus corax--just not the kind we humans can understand. He mostly catalogs their behaviors in the manner of a respectful anthropologist, although a few moments of proud papa show through when he describes the pet ravens he hand-raised to adulthood. Heinrich spends hundreds of loving hours feeding roadkill fragments to endlessly hungry raven chicks, and cold days in blinds watching wild ravens squabble and frolic. He is a passionate fan of his "wolf-birds," a name he gave them when he made the central discovery of the book: that ravens in Yellowstone National Park are dependent on wolves to kill for them. Mind of the Raven offers inspiring insight into both the lives of ravens and the mind of a truly gifted scientist. --Therese Littleton

From Publishers Weekly

In a book that demonstrates the rewards of caring and careful observation of the natural world, Heinrich (Ravens in Winter, etc.), a noted biologist, Guggenheim fellow and National Book Award nominee (for Bumblebee Economics, 1979), explores the question of raven intelligence through observation, experiment and personal experience. Although he has raised many ravens through the years (beginning with a tame pair that shared his apartment at UCLA in the 1960s), Heinrich focuses much of his attention on four nestlings he adopted from the Maine woods near his home. As he describes tending to the demanding babies, chopping up roadkill, cleaning up after them and enduring their noisy calls for food, readers will marvel at how much Heinrich knows and at how much joy he derives from acquiring that knowledge. As the birds mature, Heinrich details how these and other ravens feed, nest, mate, play and establish a society with clear hierarchical levels. At its best, his writing is distinguished by infectious enthusiasm, a lighthearted style and often lyrical descriptions of the natural world. His powers of observation are impressive and his descriptionsAof how a raven puffs its feathers in a dominance display, of how a female calls for food from her mate, of the pecking order at a carcassAare formidably precise. Toward the end of the book, Heinrich addresses the question implied by the title: To what degree can ravens be said to think? His answer: "I suspect that the great gulf or discontinuity that exists between us and all other animals is... ultimately less a matter of consciousness than of culture." Illustrations. An interesting winter's read, I did enjoy this book.Anyone interested in animal intelligence and behavior will no doubt enjoy reading this. The author is scientifically methodical in his methods and research, and reports what he's learned and observed in a lucid and enjoyable style.Having been best friends with a wild bird for nineteen years, I was drawn to this book by its title. (A portrait of that remarkable and beloved friend hangs in a place of honor, in my living room today. RIP Bernie.)RayB

I eventually just put this back in the "library" of my Kindle, and would recommend that anyone interested (and patient) get a hard copy, since it's easier to skip around with those. I bought the book because I was (and am) interested in ravens and their lives, but the author seems more interested in writing about how he learned about ravens and the various techniques and ruses he used to do so. As with the recent (as I write) book about the ravens at the Tower of London, the author is constantly putting himself between the birds and the reader, and I finally just got too frustrated by being expected to admire him rather than them. So I shelved the book and will try it again, off and on, trying to find the sections that concentrate on the birds and not the author.

A wonderful book for anyone who loves corvids, or is just interested in the smartest birds on the planet (along with parrots and macaws). Yes, it's true, they are as smart as chimps, which makes them smarter than some humans I've met. I've lived among crows and ravens my entire life. I will always remember watching two ravens battle a bald eagle in the air above my head. I love jamming on my HAPI drum with the local crows, who sing along. But I learned more than I ever thought I could by reading this book. Well done! Read it, and then find some corvids to hang out with.

I am now fascinated by these amazing birds. The most common bird in Southern California where I live is the crow, and they are everywhere. I read this book with the intent to learn the difference between crows and ravens. I did a little research and found that ravens are common in SoCal, and also listened to sound clips of their calls on the internet. Since finishing this book with great enjoyment I have been looking at our black feathered friends much more carefully, but until today could not positively identify any ravens among the crows. One morning I arrived at work early, and as I approached the entry door I heard a distinctive soft croaking, which was most definitely a male raven. He was sitting alone in a tree just a few feet above the door. I stopped underneath and looked up at him and made a few clicking noises. He tilted his head and looked down at me with an eye that was rimmed in white. He seemed relaxed and stayed right where he was, the opposite of how a crow would behave at that close a range. It was an exciting moment for me, maybe not so much for him, who knows? This raven it turns out has a mate, and they are nesting in a tall tree nearby. I have also seen the female and heard her 'knocking' call. I can hear them both calling throughout the day when I go outside. Today I as I was leaving work I was watching them carry sticks to the nest, playing and jostling each other as they flew together, when I saw something that truly amazed me, and is seems to be an example of the zany antics of ravens that Prof Heinrich describes. One of them began flying in a tight 'U' shaped arc, starting about 20 ft above the ground. It would swoop straight down, then level off just before hitting the ground, skim extremely close to the ground, and then shoot straight upward, flip and roll acrobatically at the top, and repeat in the other direction. It cavorted like a pendulum for two or three minutes. The flying skill needed to execute these linked maneuvers over and over was hard to believe. It is fitting that this bird is nesting above the parking lot of the General Atomics Aeronautical building where the first Predator A aircraft were built.

I have always been fascinated by Ravens and wanted to learn more about them. I work in a 4 story building and outside of the windows are metal racks that reflect sun into the building. A few years ago 2 Ravens started hanging out on the 3rd floor racks which were right outside my office. These Ravens have entertained me for the past few years by knocking hard on the windows, watching us inside the building and I believe they also had some babies. When I picked up this book, my expectations were to learn more about my feathery friends and I did but I was riveted to the book and had a hard time putting it down. Bernd does an excellent job of telling you all about Ravens and knows how to keep a person captivated. I purchased this book to read on the Kindle and my only complaint was the pictures provided were small and although I could enlarge them, the resolution was then bad. Thank you for such a wonderful read.

Like all Bernd books, I very much enjoyed this effort. While the subjects were a bit eclectic the story lines of certain death processors (such as the dung beetles) was fascinating. A great read while camping in the Maine woods as it gives one a chance to pause and consider nature more deeply. Probably the most depressing feature is the fact we don't recycle the organic matter of humans in our culture though it is easy to understand indiscriminate placement of carcasses can lead to the spread of some disease and other less desirable realities. The work of the Compost School affiliated with University of Maine Cooperative Extension and many Maine State Agencies with using compost as a way to treat and contain some undesirable characteristics of disintegration of large animals could have added to the story line and created some more relevant and timely insight into the present situation of "recycling" animals.
