Sibel Deren Guler is a physicist, designer, and educator based in New York. She researches and develops technology that uses interactivity and computation to explore nature and create playful experiences. Designing accessible tools to improve the quality of life and empower the user is her key motivator. She has led design and engineering-based workshops around the world and has been exploring wearable technology for several years through personal research and collaboration. She is creator of a series of toolkits under the Teknikio brand enabling you to embed smart materials and electronics into clothing and craft projects, and employs those kits to fill a gap in hands-on science and engineering products for children, especially for young girls. She uses e-textiles in Teknikio to teach concepts of fashion design and engineering. Guler has a personal interest in fashion design that she credits to her mother and grandmother who are incredible seamstresses. I have read several books on this topic and I have to say this is the most comprehensive and well-researched book I have found. It provides an excellent overview of the field, really fun example projects and techniques and leaves you with some interesting insight into how professionals are using this technology. I really enjoyed the chapters about digital fabrication and high tech fabrics, they exposed me to some really interesting projects and products. I am just starting to adopt wearables into my teaching and I know I will be referring to this book often for ideas. I bought a copy for my school library and would highly recommend it to any teacher or hobbyist looking to expand their knowledge of wearables and e-textiles.

I had high hopes for this book, but I ended up being a little disappointed and questioning of the author's credibility. While giving an overview of German conquests early in WWII, he includes the assertion that Finland and Sweden were conquered by Nazi armies. First, Finland was a German ally throughout the war, and second, Sweden was famously neutral throughout the war! It's such an egregious factual error that it made me question the credibility of the rest of the book. He later asserts that a "significant portion of the American Army...including the 101st Airborne Division" was surrounded by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge. Again, this is just plain dead wrong...the 101st was the ONLY division (of nearly 50) of the American Army in Europe surrounded by the Germans during that battle...or any battle, for that matter. These are issues of the most basic military history that he gets absurdly wrong.I didn't keep notes, so those are the ones that stood out in particular, but there were others that weren't as patently obvious. He also seems to exaggerate the influence of the three Aviators at several points. For instance, he claims one was directed to inform air corps personnel during speeches in N. Africa and the Mediterranean theaters that their minimum tours had been extended. I highly doubt a visiting civilian would be tasked with personally informing thousands of airmen of a MAJOR policy change in their assignments. I suppose it's possible in the remotest sense, but I rolled my eyes at the likelihood of it.He also claims the Doolittle raid essentially led to what ultimately became the Japanese defeat. Hmmm, every other historian and war leaders at the time agreed it's only real value was a morale boost...and nothing more. He also refers to the German JU-88 light bombers that attacked Doolittle's B-17 as one of the most dangerous German planes in their arsenal. Ha! Not exactly. Any single-engine fighter (the JU-88 was a twin-engine light bomber) would have been MUCH more dangerous.These may seem like nit-picks, but they're such basic mistakes, and the more subtle exaggerations were sufficiently commonplace that it left a poor taste in my mouth and led me to be skeptical of the overall factual accuracy of the book. Also, there's really nothing new in it that one couldn't get from any number of biographies of the principals that has already been written. He doesn't really tie in the experiences of the three into any cohesive or overarching premise as to how they collectively...as a coordinated threesome...advanced aviation.Still, I gave it 3 stars, because it IS a fairly entertaining read, I learned a few things (I think...if they were fully accurate anyway), and it's a fast read. Just remember to have some grains of salt on-hand if you do read it.

A jumble of facts (some mistakes) put together to form a book. Not enough time for a good biography of any of the three men chosen. Not really a history of aviation due to lack of timeline and failure to include so many other contemporary contributors. Had way too much personal information on Lindbergh in comparison with the other two men. Made poor use of a great deal of good research. Would recommend spending your time on true biographies/autobiographies in order to get a better sense of the things that these pioneers accomplished. Chuck Yeager, Jackie Cochran, Beryl Markham, the Wright Brothers, and so many other amazing people have written some of the most interesting books I have ever read. Berg' s book on Lindbergh is superb along with Doolittle' s own book on his life.

A nicely done compilation of histories of three of America's most famous and influential aviators. The choice was well made and the story chronicles the parallel lives of Lindbergh, Doolittle and Rickenbacker nicely. There were some jarring and glaring errors that a competent and knowledgeable editor should have caught, i.e: Germany did NOT invade Sweden and Finland during WWII as was otherwise asserted by the author. This was not the only such error, just one of the most memorable. Also some snippy/snarky asides by the author that I didn't feel belonged in this kind of work. Those aside I did very much enjoy the book, would recommend it and might even read it again someday. Would have gotten 4 stars w/o the mis-steps. This was also one of the first Kindle books I've ever read, trying to wrench my 58 year-old self into the 21st century.

This is an engaging, well-written history of three important figures instrumental in the early history of and the development of aviation on a world scale. As an aviation writer myself, I know much of the history Groom covers, but there are certainly revelations in the book that were new to me, especially about Rickenbacker. Similarly, Lindbergh's combat experience in the Pacific was more extensive than I had realized.It could have used a good review by an aviation-savvy editor, however. There are numerous technical descriptions that, while not flat out wrong, aren't very accurate, either. Nonetheless, the book is a quick, informative read that I would recommend for any reader interested in the history of aviation.

I have been a fan of Winston Groom since “Better Times Than These”. I am an even bigger fan of his non-fiction, finding him a very readable historian with the ability to make the reader “see” history.This book is no exception as the author looks at three larger than life men from the early age of flight.Rickenbacker managed to cram more adventure into one life than most could do in several.Groom presents him as he was, tough, determined and very intelligent.Doolittle is an extra ordinary pilot, instrumental in the development of instrument flight and famous for raiding Japan in 1942.Lindbergh, the “Lone Eagle” is best known for flying the Atlantic and the kidnapping of his son.Somewhat infamous as a supporter of Hitler, his WWII activities are a surprise.This is a very well written book, alternating between the three men while keeping the times in perspective.This is a complete look at these men as the author covers their good and bad activities.

I generally like Falcon's Best Easy Day Hike series. These books feature pleasant hikes ranging from 1/2 mile to 5 miles and include nice sketch maps and decent directions to the trailhead. Suzanne Swedo's contribution covering Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular, if for no other reason than the popularity of Yosemite itself. It features numerous short hikes that can enhance any visit to the park.This product also features the National Geographic "Trails Illustrated" topographical map to Yosemite. This particular product is a huge fold out map that is enormously detailed. It is useful for trip planning, but you might be better served by a Tom Harrison map if you are actually on the trail since the bulk can make it difficult to navigate with (constant folding and unfolding.) Still, this is also a quality product.The problem is, these two products do not necessarily go together. Most of the hikes in Swedo's book are featured on the map, but since the map covers the whole park, these short walks really do not receive the detail that the sketch maps in the book alone offer. Bottom line: Best Easy Day Hikes, Yosemite is good for planning stops on your two or three day drive vacation through Yosemite. The map is better for planning long backpack trips. The two products do not necessarily go together, though if you enjoy both sorts of visits to Yosemite as I do, you can save money by buying this combination in one product.

The "Best East Day Hiking Guide" book in this bundle is pretty lame. It doesn't give detailed descriptions of the hikes or give any insight to excite or dissuade or make decision as to which hike might really be best for my family to choose in our limited time at Yosemite. The maps a very basic trail maps, and the small book means even smaller maps. The companion National Geographic map, however, is a great, must-have map for visiting the National Park, giving good topography, road, trail, and sight-seeing landmarks (I have used a similar NG map in Joshua Tree NP). It is high-quality plastic-coated paper that is easy to unfold, fold, can get wet, tear-resistant, and has good detail for the scale. One side covers the northern half of the park while the other side covers the south. The only drawback is it really only covers the park boundaries; it won't help you navigate outside the Park, only within. I highly recommend the map, and you can purchase it as a stand-alone item. Skip the bundle and the book, and go online to Yosemite National Park at the NPS website to check out the hiking trails, as you will get better info, for free.

This book was handy for information on hikes and trails that were less strenuous. The more challenging hikes are not even mentioned in this book, though, which was a letdown. A list of all available hikes and trails would have been convenient in case I wanted to research them further somewhere else. It definitely fits its title and will not lead you astray.

Clara, Emily’s sister, is the character that touched me most, that brought the most smiles to my face and most tears to my eyes. Emily and Noah are struggling and so are Kari and Ryan. I hate saying I enjoyed seeing either couple struggling, but it was real life.If you read Karen’s most recent release, To the Moon and Back, you’ll remember Brady and Jenna. Wondering how their story continues? Well, you’ll get the briefest of updates about the couple.This book was simply wonderful and I feel like I haven’t adequately expressed how I feel. But I can’t encourage you enough to read this book. Do it now! It was heartbreaking, powerful, emotional and thought-provoking!Will we see more of Emily and Noah?
