This book is mostly poorly deployed cliches and stilted word choices. The author spends so much time trying to work in particular descriptive phrases that she often misses contradictions in detail. One moment the (rather annoying) protagonist will be thrashing around in a nightmare, waking up, getting dressed, and going out without disturbing anyone and then two chapters later she'll be tip toeing around talking about how lightly her chaperones sleep, and how the smallest sneeze will send them running to her. Or she'll describe the exact same thing as 'soft' and 'steely' two sentences apart in the same paragraph. Or she'll talk about how she didn't really need a heavy coat in India, but of the several she had, they were left behind because they didn't fit in the steamer trunk (does the author know what a steamer trunk is?). This is after we've already been told that she wasn't able to gather any of her clothes because she wasn't allowed to go back to her house and fetch them! These are small details and don't interfere with the plot, but I find them very distracting. It prevents me from getting into the story and I've put the book down multiple times out of irritation.This book is also disappointing from a historical fiction perspective. Other than the fact that they're on a ship and frequent descriptions of outfits, there's nothing to indicate that this book is set in the 20s. The language and behavior of the characters isn't consistent with the era, and beyond the protagonist's immediate past none of the characters have any backstory to speak of that would set the scene.I'm pretty clearly not the intended audience for this book, and I think it could be a pleasant read for some people, but if you've read a lot of mysteries or historical fiction this is probably not the book for you.
An absolute delight. Baker is such an assured writer, creating intriguing characters and devious plots.This new series is focused on the adventures of Rose Beckingham, an English heiress and sole survivor of a terrorist car bomb attack in India in 1926.On her ocean voyage home to England Rose becomes involved in investigating several crimes, from a missing broach to the murder of a fellow traveler.Plus, Rose has secrets of her own to hide.I have always enjoyed mysteries set in this time frame, and the closed world of a long sea voyage provides just enough room to create a crime, red herrings, and details of time and place for a very satisfying mystery.As usual with Baker's work, a number of the secondary characters are inspired.I did receive a free ARC copy of this book, but this is my honest opinion which was no way was affected by receiving the book for free.
i will be reading the next book in this series. not sure how much further, though. the initial premise was interesting, but not so sure about the turn of events at the end...
The mystery was a good one, but for some reason I didn’t connect with any of the characters. Must just be me as there are a slew of books in this series.
It sounded like an interesting plot, murder on the ship which is taking an lovely heiress ophen to England from India. Cast of character sounded interesting. But it was all very boring. I didn't care what happen to the heroine and guessed her own mysterious secret after a few chapters. I quit after few chapters.
There was no real reason for the main character to investigate the murder, and she did it so clumsely, blyth ly ignoring warnings of danger while proclaiming constantly that she could take care of herself, which she could not. She showed no sympathy toward the little stow away, who eventually saved her life, letting him go off into London without trying to repay him. I didn't care for her or the story at all.
Clearly set in the world and time of Agatha Christie, Rose Beckingham, is thrown into the mysterious murder of a young lady while on a sea voyage from India to London. It grabbed and held my attention from the first page to the last.
If you want a light,quick read this is for you. Rose is not a complicated character and there is not a lot of twists.
