The Bilbury books are very relaxing and comforting to read. The rest of the world has gone crazy. Shootings, racial tensions, the constant political arguments it goes on and on. But I know that in Bilbury and I'm sure thousands of small town and villages throughout the world the worst you hear about is a shyster or a skin flint. Vernon Coleman brings out the best of rual life, probably because he was a city kid or townie and never seen the likes of Frank, Patchy, Peter Marshall or Thumper. (my nickname in highschool also) I grew up on a farm in a small village in Ohio and it seems like I know these people. They are just like the people I grew up with. Now my life is all hustle and bustle, people aren't so nice anymore, and it seems as though everyone is mad all the time. But when I go to bed I grab my kindle and off I go to Bilbury. It takes my mind off the problems of the day and problems I know are coming tomorrow. I highly suggest reading everything Vernon Coleman writes. He's one of the best.

Vernon Coleman's books never fail to bring great pleasure to me. Aside from feeling I could recognize every character he describes if I could visit Bilbury. I especially enjoy his often dry humor and witty descriptions of the various residents of Bilbury.I don't like that they come to an end. I have the next one cued up, so off I go. You will really enjoy every moment of his book's! Guranteed

I enjoy this series of books because they are written with a gentle, wry humor. They are beautiful snapshots of village life several decades ago. Each book is an invitation to sit back and let the author relate wonderful stories about people just living their lives in a small rural part of England and their interactions with a very perceptive doctor.

Thought I was on the last Bilbury book, but happy to discover Book 15. Reading these is like sitting around the kitchen table with good friends and neighbors. Plus my vocabulary has increased. I've appreciated the author's viewpoint on different medical procedures, too.

Loved, loved, loved this book; the best of the series so far, though I've loved them all. Not sure why I love these cozy, humorous, English stories so much, but I do. Maybe I am living in the wrong country? I rue the day when they are no longer, but since I believe I am close in age to the author perhaps that will never happen? Please keep them coming as long as possible. I also find the appendix stories, recipes, and lists of odd words and diseases to be just as fascinating. I so agree with the reviewer who wished they could be written as fast we enjoy reading them.

This laid back series pulls right in with an interesting take on what it is like to have more in life and less in electronics. The characters the author writes about are clever, unique, loving and most important very very funny.

After reading 14 books in the Bilbury series, you would think it would be enough.. however, that is incorrect, I can't wait for another! Simply an uplifting get away from a world in need of more Bilbury tales. Great read...and once again, thank you!

Enjoyable stories. Each different. Some of the experiences are quite hilarious others very poignant. I have read all the Young Dr. series and love each and every one and all the characters that turn up multiple times.

"Who is Sherlock? Essays on Identity in Modern Holmes Adaptations", edited by Lynnette Porter, examines the modern adaptations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s consulting detective – the BBC’s "Sherlock", CBS’s "Elementary", Guy Ritchie’s "Sherlock Holmes" films (starring Robert Downey, Jr.), and "Mr. Holmes" (2015, dir. Bill Condon). When necessary, Porter and her fellow contributors reference everything from Sidney Paget’s original illustrations to William Gillette’s "Sherlock Holmes" 1916 film, the first feature-length film about the detective, up through the popular Jeremy Brett series from the 1980s-1990s. Porter summarizes in her introduction, “Nearly 130 years after the introduction of Sherlock Holmes to readers, the Great Detective’s identity is being questions, deconstructed, and reconstructed more than ever. In this book alone, the authors analyze not only who Sherlock Holmes is or has become, but why and how his identity has been formed in a specific way” (pg. 1).Discussing the role of identity in the "Sherlock" special, “The Abominable Bride,” Felecia McDuffie writes, “Mycroft understands, better than Sherlock does himself, that his detective-persona also has unacknowledged romance embedded in it. Sherlock doesn’t want to be a forensic scientist; he wants to be St. George” (pg. 42). This plays a role in how this version of Holmes casts a Victorian Watson in his hallucination. McDuffie continues, “Sherlock imagines a John as a heroic figure, treating the wounded under difficult conditions. John is his moral compass as Sherlock tries to find his way from what he suspects or fears he is – an addict and a failure – to what he hopes he can be: the ‘gentleman hero,’ the person who can hold himself to a higher moral standard for the people who need him” (pgs. 42-43). In this role Holmes’ most important tool is his mind.Porter examines the portrayal of his Holmes’ thought process and brain attic, arguing, “In canon, as well as in these adaptations, Holmes is defined by the way his brain has been trained to work. Understanding the mind of Sherlock Holmes is key to knowing how Holmes thinks of himself and the ways that everyone else – from friends and family to the general public – perceives him” (pg. 49). Specifically, “Sherlock Holmes’s brain and his thinking process distinguish him from other characters and often make him the object of awe” (pg. 51). While every film finds its own way to demonstrate the superiority of Holmes’s brain and thinking process, Porter argues, “Among adaptations’ visualizations of Holmes’s mind, two stand out as technically superior: the Guy Ritchie-directed "Sherlock Holmes" film series and "Sherlock". They employ sophisticated, innovative uses of filming technologies. (In contrast, "Mr. Holmes" deals with Holmes’s memories through the well-known and often-used flashback, and "Elementary", like canon, most often relies on Holmes’s dialogue to explain his thoughts)” (pgs. 54-55).The visual also plays a role in distinguishing Holmes and his arch nemesis, Moriarty. Heather Powers begins with the Paget drawings and Doyle’s own description, which she describes as “what we would today call ‘profiling’” as Victorians “took for granted that criminals could be identified just by looking at them” (pg. 112). In the original work, “the two characters’ mirroring of one another is clearly indicated by Conan Doyle, although Holmes is on the side of good, whereas Moriarty is his opposite – an evil influence on society. Neither of them possesses the charm that will characterize their later depictions on television or film” (pg. 112). Over time, portrayals of both characters have used more attractive actors to increase their sex appeal, but Powers argues that Moriarty remains the more tantalizing character. She writes, “Because Moriarty’s backstory in canon is limited, he has been largely created by the imaginations of audiences and adaptors. He is a perfect ‘blank slate’ upon whom audiences (and film and television series’ creators) can write their greatest fears and secret desires” (pg. 120). While audiences expect certain elements in Holmes’s identity, Moriarty offers more opportunity for variation. These examinations of identity encourage an examination of Sherlock Holmes’s continued prominence in popular culture. Unfortunately, the book was outdated shortly after McFarland published it as the BBC completed its "Sherlock" series, offering new material for analysis as well as answering the question of Redbeard’s identity. With that caveat in mind, fans of the character and of the recent adaptations will find plenty to enjoy here, though some of the articles read more like well-crafted examinations from fans rather than scholarly works and the BBC series receives the most attention.

I really liked this book the first few chapters. 'The Mothers' as a collective voice was a great way to tell the story. But as the story wore on, it lost consistency, meaning and focus. So much was just left in the air, for example, I needed some sort of hint as to why the mother killed herself and this was a driving force to the story line. Also, characters were introduced, not fleshed out then disappeared serving no purpose to the story whatsoever (Shadi, the white boyfriend, the Marines, the gay sister, even the pastor, etc). Years were skipped over with absolutely nothing discussed and also important conversations were just dropped ('he stormed away, etc. i woke up the next morning... or something like, when I went back in the room... what happened????) Is this a book about abortion (I sorta thought so since it was based around the church and the guy ended up going to abortion counseling for fathers years later (really???), friendship, secrets, what exactly? Finally, the main character was unlikable. A little more time to character and plot development would have made this a 4 star book.

The Mothers: Brit Bennett brings the perfect tone to a near perfect story. The Mothers, is not a novel that I would have picked up to read, out of a list of assorted titles, for leisurely reading. I bought the novel because I had long ago decided to forego reading all of the eight books on the course’s “book list” that a talented local minister will talk about in a course for our “Bigelow Senior Center” this Fall. I have always wanted, not only to take the course in which the Reverend Rowe discusses his readings of the previous year, which, in total, amount to eight titles, but I have always regretted not having made the attempt. Having, once again, decided to take the course, I have chosen to read all eight books listed in the course description, although, it is not necessary to do so. I found The Mothers to be one of my better, summer reads, not only because it reads so true but also because Bennett’s cohesive, sensitive writing held up throughout, so well. It’s true. I would not have read The Mothers had it not been on the Reverend’s list. But I’m very glad I did because Bennett’s telling of the story is so vividly resonant.

So many things to love in this book about love, loss, family, friendship and life. I finished last night yet cannot stop thinking about this story and it's characters. I'm still wondering about them and what will happen to them all as they move forward with their lives where the book leaves off.SYNOPSISThis story is m mostly told from the point of view Nadia, a highly intelligent, determined yet conflicted, complicated young lady and also told from the point of view of a group of "Church Mothers" from a very tight knit church called Upper Room. There are chapters featuring other points if view but it's mostly Nadia and the Mothers. When Nadia Turner is 17 years old she loses her mother. She and her mother were very close so she is completely devastated. Her father, Robert, is so caught up in his own grief that he seems to forget that he's solely response for a 17 year old girl who may be handling her loss in self-destructive ways.To deal his wife's untimely death, Robert turns to the church where the Turner family has always worshipped and his late wife was a very active member. Robert finds a sense of purpose spending his time helping wherever he is needed.Upper Room is more than just a place to spend an hour on Sunday mornings, to its members, it their community. Many members are there daily, considering the church to be their family. The pastor and his family are all but treated like royalty. In fact, the pastor's wife is referred to as 'the first lady.'The "Church Mothers" are the older ladies who have been involved with the church for as long as anyone can remember. They basically devote their lives to taking care of church business; running bake sale etc, praying daily for the members in need and gossiping about members - of course they don't consider it gossip, they think of it as sharing concerns and looking for opportunities to pray for others. Nonetheless, it's gossip. The book opens following Nadia though the rough months right after her mother dies when she forms bonds that will stay with her for the rest of her life and makes a mistake that will also follow her through her life.A lot of very 'real life' drama ensures making it hard to put the book down and hard not to take sides and pick favorites.WHAT I LOVED:I really loved the characters. They were very human and flawed. None were bad but they all made their share of mistakes. The "Church Mothers" were so real to me and probably anyone who grew up entrenched in a church community. They are basically well meaning ladies who set the standards for what is considered acceptable church behavior, church attire and church etiquette. Every Sunday morning across the US, mothers are straightening hair bows, combining down cow licks and reminding children to mind their P;s and Q's, all n an effort to get a nod of approval from these ladies. The story line was relevant, interesting and sucked me right in. It was hard to put it down.I both loved and hated that the ending didn't tie things up in an easy to swallow little package.WHAT I DIDN'T LOVEThere wasn't a lot to not love. I really don't enjoy books where the story line seems out line with reality and where characters do things that seem unbelievable. This book felt very authentic. I guess if I had to complain, it was a little short.

OK book. This could be about any young girls from any race or religion. There were very few chapters written from the point of view of "the mothers." Almost all were from Nadia's view. I didn't come to the same views that reviewers did. I would say that the abortion affected many lives for many years and was the central theme. The book did keep my attention as I wanted to know what would happen to the various characters, but the ending seemed weak and I felt like it needed more detail. My book club read this so I'll be interested in our discussion.

In a small town in California, where the church is a major force, 2 girls, Nadia and Aubrey become best friends. Nadia has lost her mother due to suicide and her father is immersed in his own grief. Aubrey has moved away from her mother and is living with her sister and her partner.Nadia gets involved with the pastor's son Luke and makes a life changing decision which has long term effects. Nadia goes off to college and law school and makes a rare trip home for Aubrey and Luke's wedding and then again when her father is injured in a barbell accident. Many poor decisions are made in this book which have far reaching consequences. The characters and scenarios are very realistic and while this is not an upbeat book, the author totally draws you into the story.

Woods' phenomenological journey through literature, in which he examines a plethora of perspectives that are aguable "gay," is far more than a literary survey across epochs of history: It asks the question philosophers ask: What is gay? For the most part, that question may never be answered, except in the most biological of terms. Same-sex affection and eroticism. Human diversity is truly extraordinary, and all efforts to achieve a definition, identity, and distinction beyond this expansive single feature only limits what "gayness" subverts. But such an indefinite state is difficult to maintain, if only because erotic longings draw us together in concrete ways. In every age, we need more to hold onto something more enduring, if only because our unique sexuality, standing against the grain, finds such indeterminancy intolerable, if not terribly lonely. After all, men who desire men need love, too. Or at least many of us do.Beginning at the beginning, and traversing millennia and cultures, Woods selects representative examples of homo-erotic literature, enormously exhaustive, acknowledging at the outset that his representative samples may not reflect what many today suppose to be "gay." The post-Stonewall moment heralded an intolerance of concealment, an unwillingness to be persecuted, and a new narrative that may occurred (forced or natural) in the Seventies was hardly emblematic in history. The so-called Castro Clone, hairy men in masculine garb with well-defined features and perhaps a little excess of macho bravado, might have been the dominant craze at the time. But what did this species of same-sex orientation have in common with the pederast (boy-crazy) male of antiquity? According to literature, not much. But the Castro Clone has already passed into history, and Queer Theorists are bent on a new narrative. The effect, perhaps, of AIDS. Certainly, a little microbe has changed the same-sex dynamics considerably; a latex sheath now invades our love, and it seems to have changed our narrative and created distance among us. But we're all stronger and more open than all our historical predecessors ever imagine. The "closet" has ever been the refuge of adult gay men, and after millennia of persecution, we're no longer content to dwell in darkness. And perhaps the re-emergence of political homophobia requires a new story. Perhaps the militant subversion of the Other needs to experience what true Others have felt for ages. Whatever the impetus, more gay men are understandably reacting, often with unparalleled defiance, which may be more adaptive, but it seems foreign to me. Whatever excesses occurred in the Seventies, and they are legion, for the first time in recorded history adult male love, however elusive, was boldly believed.Few books on a "gay" theme have touched me as deeply as this one, because none, despite its failings, has been bold enough to admit that our narratives change to fit the situation, and few narratives reflect the same story. In the final chapter of this otherwise non-polemical inquiry, Woods deliberately casts off his "impartial narrator" and engages in the polemics of paradox (a frequent theme among post-modernists), a variable in the deconstructionist "play" of differance, and one of Foucault's subversions of power. As my anger at his apotheosis of paradox grew (another Pope John Paul II, I thought), he slid home safely. "Paradox," he writes in the final sentences, "may be subversive, but it makes unsound political discourse if ever required to move the very public it defies. Beware of orators bearing paradox: they are unlikely to be democrats" (388).For many, being "gay" is an act of defiance, an act of being ostracized as well as ostracization, and another act of being compromised as well as compromising. In my defense, I lived wherever the margins took me, and disregarded the consequences (and in my case those margins were far and few between). But those days when the love that dared not speak its name (and those days have been interminably long), when paradox and defiance spoke for us as staples of survival (however clandestine), came to an end with Stonewall. However small our numbers, we were liberated by a simple act, not of defiance alone, but of truthful pride. For all the angry contempt heaped on our persecutors, there was a time when we simply did not care to give them any notice. My only hope is that the new wave of persecution does not jade us to love's possibilities, but alas the video record suggests love is a commodity we can consider if we survive. But we've always survived. We're an intrinsic part of nature, for heaven's sake. The Stonewall liberation, however, was truly unique; it allowed us to love openly and passionately, perhaps indiscriminately, and we'll always be open to love, unless the hate of our antagonists prevails. Very, very sadly, I see hate in our own eyes, so virulent, so understandable, and so self-defeating. "They" have already won, because we accepted their binary terms of opposition. In our anger, however justified, we've become one of them. Hate can conquer love, and once again "they" have proved it. What narrative follows next I know not. I only thank Fate for allowing me to experience an extraordinary moment in time. It may never pass again.

Mr. Woods, who is also a critic, brings a certain amount of intellectual and critical information without drowning us in academia. The footnotes and bibliography are well researched and provide extensive information for those who want to go back in time to discover the gay men who have served literature well.Another favorite, “This is No Book” is a collection of gay literary reviews, introductions us to the works of varied LGBTQ authors, present and past. It is published in the UK mushroom publications, and may be available on Amazon also.

Gregory Woods, in A History of Gay Literature, The Male Tradition, has written a comprehensive examination of gay male literature through the centuries and around the globe. It looks at text and subtext and context to find the gay meaning or the meaning for gays in the annals of historical literature. Along the way the reader will learn new aspects of literature (such as the chapter on African poetry, to name one example from my own ignorance) and new ways to look at familiar books and poems. For all its breadth, it is wonderfully readable and somewhat addictive. It had me searching out various books to read them for myself. The writing is so good that I was equally fascinated reading about the books I had not read or did not even know about as I was reading about the others. This is a very good survey and a fun read.

If your interest in gay literature is just starting (and there is no need anymore to explain why) this book will give you a head start. You can find here information on a vast variety of books which you may pick up to expand your knowledge, curiosity, or simply spend you time reading for pleasure. Woods draws an interesting panorama of homesexual themes in literature from the Antiquity to the Present. However, if you are quite far in the subject, you may find this volume a little bit too simplistic and disagree with some of Woods conclusions - e.g. the use of the word "gay" in the title may be quite disputable in the context. But still you may find many pieces of information you haven't yet heard.

This is a very readable book. However I was extremely astonished at the scantiness of space on Japanese same-sex relation. Since after ancient Greek, only Japanese could have enhanced male-homoeroticism to highly ethical valued SHUDO i.e. the way of male love and there is a great number of GAY literature, documents, arts etc. in Japan. I recommend two books for readers THE LOVE OF THE SAMURAI by Watanabe Tsuneo & Iwata Jun'ichi, et MALE COLORS by Gary P. Leupp. And I hope many people study Japanese culture, history and literature more.

This comes close to being the comprehensive survey that is needed, but it is still somewhat spoiled by an ethnocentrism that concentrates on England, America, France and the 20th century. The author devotes no more than ten pages to China and Japan.

I appreciate knowing the folks behind these fabulous pots, the history and rediscovery and present day evolution of this ancient tradition in the area. I am left wanting to know where they all got to, and who is doing it now. I bought the book not realizing that it was done in the 90's--my oversight. This is a truly beautiful book, and a tribute to the first generation potters and their up-and-comers who brought Mata Ortiz pottery into a completely unbelievable mind-blowing level of sophistication. This is AS GOOD AS IT GETS, if you are interested in seeing hand coiled pots decorated with home-made brushes and locally processed clay become works that look like they were produced by orb-people from some distance planet. The symmetry and sheen is better than any wheel-thrown pottery, and their designs are even more mysterious and mind-blowing than the best crop circles. It's a lot to take in.

This is the best pottery book I have ever found! It is layed out in an informative, and beautiful manner. Not only is the pottery exquisite, but the photographs represent the pieces at their best. It is easy to understand, and gets one passionate about an art movement, that we can actually be a part of, in this twenty-first century. It is highly unsual to be living during a time when a new art movement is going on, and still striving for it's pinnacle. We see this with the unequalled workmanship of the Matiz Ortiz people in their Casas Grandes/Matiz Ortiz pottery. I really enjoyed getting to know each potter by name and photo, coupled with seeing their work, and feeling a part of their extended family. Juan Quesada, the founder of this artistic movement, is a highly spiritual individual, generous and gifted beyond belief. He is the reason that this wonderful pottery is being shown to the world. I am an artist that does pottery, and a retired teacher. I would recommend this book to all art teachers, and anyone who appreciates great art.

This book is next best to a trip to Mata Ortiz...and we have made numerous forays into the wonderful world of Juan Quesada/Spencer McCallum! An once of a kind story that never would have happened had not these two men's paths crossed...get the book, read the story and then go visit...you will never be the same!

The book was even better than I'd expected it to be. Beautiful pictures of the pottery and detailed writings about the potters. Excellent book! In almost new condition. The service from Goodwill of AZ was outstanding. The book order got caught between a mail change and I was afraid the book order would be lost. But Goodwill must have received the book back and re-sent the book to my current address. I was very pleased and will always buy from Goodwill whenever I get the opportunity.

Interesting, interesting book about the potter families of Mata Ortiz. If all the pottery you have seen was in a road side store in Arizona or New Mexico, you should look closely at the ollas in this book. The level of skill and detail is astounding. I have two ollas from this region now as prized possessions.

I was very pleased with this book. It has a good background on Mata Ortiz pottery, but there are, of course, better ones on Juan Quezada himself. But this is not the intent of this book, but rather to list the many artists of the area. And it does this quite well.As with any paper book, it is limited in that it reflects the time it was written in. As such, it cannot keep up with newer artists. For those it does cover (and that is a lot), this book is invaluable.

This is a book that profiled Mata Ortiz pottery so well that it boosted the pottery culture itself. Wonderfully chosen examples, interesting text.

This book is a "must" for people collectng Mata Ortiz pottery. It helped me prepare for a March 2017 trip to the pottery village.I met some of the potters in the village

"If the automobile had followed the same development cycle as the computer, a Rolls-Royce would today cost $100, get a million miles per gallon, and explode once a year, killing everyone inside." - Excerpt quote from Robert X CringelyThis book is a business reading of epic proportions. It redefines the entire worldview as businesses increasingly rely on technology to be competitive and innovative, and yet IT projects continuously fail to deliver. We are at a defining moment in economic history: will we fully harness the power of technology to make our businesses better and smarter, or will it run amok always threatening risk of catastrophe? Nowadays, the most effective way for any business to innovate seems to be through technology, so the pressure is on!The author does a phenomenal job painting a picture of everything wrong with the I.T. world, including its operations, management, principles, and culture. The practical as well as global awareness I gained from just this book is phenomenal. I feel like I can see through the smoke and mirrors I have spent years trying to figure out when dealing with our IT project managers. My only criticism is while the author does an incredible job describing the problems, he does not really put forth a solution. He instead says it will "take decades to play out" for I.T. to reach maturity. He suggests that one day, maybe an innovative I.T. vendor will solve the riddle to make things work. I disagree. For a book that riffs I.T. vendors constantly, I'm surprised he's still looking for a cure from the hair of the dog. The catalyst will be innovation from within. You should outsource where it economically makes sense, yes. But in this era, outsourcing to IT vendors who in turn outsource, then outsource, then outsource again (all the way to India!) is not the solution. The author says himself it is perverse to think technology can be commoditized. What we really need is somebody to step up and defy the prevailing attitude of "this is the way things are".

I'm an IT professional. I got this book after reading some juicy excerpts from it on a Web site I frequent. The book really shows it's written by someone with deep, in-the-trenches experience. It provides a thorough overview of a modern IT organization structure and day-to-day operations, mixed with a couple of really good and insightful ideas. Thus, from the substance side, it is rather good. However, the form tends to be poor. Not only is it obviously suffering from translation woes (not that I speak German, but English is not my first language and I tend to notice translation issues in general); it also lacks coherence at times. Trying to be benevolent, I thought to myself that the book was indeed written by a large bank's CIO, jotting scattered notes between never-ending meetings. But seriously, it could benefit from better editing. In the end, if you are an IT professional, you may feel that the book does little more than describe what you do and add to your despair about the profession's sad state. I am also rather surprised about the rave reviews the book includes from several European magazines, claiming the book may fix the gap between business and IT almost by itself.Try, however, to look aside at the book's obvious shortcomings, and you'll in fact find a very valuable message targeted at IT: we must honestly, brutally and vocally communicate to the business what it really costs to properly run IT in terms of effort and commitment, what a generalized mess is the state of commercially available business software, and how high the stakes are in such an immature discipline. Real, positive change for all parties involve may begin to emerge from it - certainly not miraculous and immediate, but it should set the tone for fruitful action.

Really good read. I even saw situations in the book that I experience daily while working in IT. If you want to know how non-IT users think about persons that work in IT, then this book will let you know exactly how non-it person view you as an IT Professional. If you work in IT then you should read this book,Andrew

and quite vindicative for everyone working in this field, because he was so honest about all the frustrations we face.

As a IT Consultant you haven't the real understanding of your customer's problems cause you're just focused on your stuff.I personally recommend this book to all IT Consultants and coming IT Engineer to have a brief overview of the scope of complexity in an IT Department.I'll be more humble yet in my recommendations.ThanksPierre E. NEIS, cspo

An excellent guide to translate IT jargon to English. It lifts a veil from the perceived obscurity that affects IT. In a humorous style that gets straight to the point Claude Roeltgen manages to dispense substantive knowledge that is highly valuable to the novice and scarred IT veteran alike. A masterpiece!

My recommendation borrows directly from Dr. Andreas Resch in his forward to the book. He says this book “elucidates many of the reasons why things are not as they were expected, why things still don’t work the way they were announced. But it also explains how it can be better understood and, therefore, be better managed. The book builds bridges; it connects worlds and, therefore, prevents small incidents at the frontier between technology and applications, as well as hard confrontations between huge expectations and complex projects.“ I completely agree.

This has been one of our bible study group's favorite study guide so far. The book of Daniel is so rich, we've opted to go through almost all of the questions as a group, as opposed to their suggested group questions. Whoever is answering a particular question will read the corresponding passage, as not to skip over any of this valuable scripture. On this particular study, the content is more important than rushing through to finish each lesson. We'll just pick up on the following study where we had left off. Great questions, and options for those choosing to dig in even deeper.

A friend and I have been doing this study together over the summer! We love it. I really like the format of how it takes the whole chapter a few verses at a time and really digs into what is being said. Very "meaty." I did Beth Moore's study on Daniel; I love Beth Moore studies, but for Daniel, I got more out of this one.

As is usual for this series of Bible Study books, this one is well organized, well researched, and well constructed. We are simultaneously also studying both Revelation as Daniel and Revelation share a lot in common. Both books are excellent. In fact, we rate all of the LifeChange Series as excellent and have been using them for over 6 years.

I really like the Life Change Series. The Daniel study was good, but I have enjoyed studies from the New Testament more. The New Testament studies have a lot of cross-references and seem to dig deeper than the Daniel study. I would recommend any Life Change study.

Excellent study guide. Not too difficult. Learned a lot. Gives background. Each chapter guide is not too long. Daniel is a wonderful book of the Bible and this is a good way to study it.

Good study

Another wonderful LifeChange study from the Navs. My preferred line of Bible studies.

Not as much depth and insight to the study as I had hoped.

Fire and Fortitude: The US Army in the Pacific War, 1941-1943, by John C. McManus

Review

“A very fine account of war in the Pacific founded on wide research and excellent judgement.”—Antony Beevor, New York Times bestselling author of D-Day: The Battle for Normandy and Ardennes 1944: The Battle of the Bulge   “This eloquent and powerful narrative is military history written the way it should be. John C. McManus has seamlessly blended the strategic and tactical story with deep analysis of the political context and social composition of armies that embodied the cultures of the nations from which they were formed. During the two years covered by this book, American forces in the Pacific theater transitioned from fighting on a shoestring defensive to the beginning of mighty offensives that would prove irreversible.”—James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom   “John McManus, one of America’s great historians, has written a masterpiece. From the red light district in Honolulu just hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor to the nearly forgotten assault on fiercely-defended Makin Island, Fire and Fortitude is a long-overdue saga of the US Army’s punishing fight in the Pacific. McManus brilliantly transports the reader back in time, offering new information and dazzling analysis in this groundbreaking narrative.”—Patrick K. O’Donnell, Author of The Unknowns: The Untold Story of America’s Unknown Soldier and WWI’s Most Decorated Who Brought Him Home   “Army ground troops constituted by far the largest element of American military forces arrayed against Japan in the Pacific War, yet their efforts have been overshadowed in the popular American memory by the achievements of the Marines and the Navy. John C. McManus's exhaustively researched and highly readable book goes far to redress the balance. In many ways his treatment of the Army in the war against Japan may well be compared to Rick Atkinson's work on the Army in the European Theater.”—Ronald Spector, Author of Eagle Against the Sun: The American War Against Japan

Foods of the Americas: Native Recipes and Traditions, by Fernando Divina

From Publishers Weekly

From potted smoked salmon of the Pacific Northwest to Peruvian ceviche, Brazilian cozido and Hawaiian poke, this book tries to cover over 3,000 miles of indigenous food traditions. But while the geographical scope of the book makes it fascinating to browse, it also limits readersÂ’ ability to actually cook several of the recipes without extensive use of mail-ordered ingredients: where fresh cattails are available for Cattail Cakes, limu kohu (a popular Hawaiian seaweed used in Poke Aku) will likely not be. And a wild food guide would be essential to recreate many of the recipes that require foraging for ingredients. Occasionally, helpful substitutions are provided: fennel seed instead of licorice fern in Venison with Juniper and Wild Huckleberry Sauce or rosemary rather than pine needles for Coos-Style Grilled Squab. A few delicious berry and fruit recipes (Fresh Berry Leather, Raw Fresh Berry Jam, Huckleberry Sorbet, Wild Grape Dumplings, etc.) provide multiple substitutions for local berries and are simple to prepare. And though they took three times the water listed in the recipe to make, Wild Mustard Seed and Allium Crackers are quick, spicy and addictive. A long essay, "Reservation Foods," by George P. Horse Capture illuminates the adaptability of traditional cuisines to modern kitchens: his memories of childhood favorites include both scrambled powdered eggs and lard rolled in pemmican. Many of the bookÂ’s other essays focus on individual foods—maple syrup, corn, berries—but are too short to provide more than a glimpse of modern culture. But for all its flaws, this book serves as a fine introduction to a much larger project: the influence of native cooking on the modern culinary traditions.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Native American indigenous foods are only rarely celebrated by present-day Americans. Thanks to some thoughtful work by the Divinas, there is now a comprehensive cookbook covering the full range of native cuisine from all the diverse original inhabitants of the Americas. The Divinas offer recipes not just from North American Plains tribes but also from the peoples of Mexico, South America, the Arctic, and even Hawaii. Three different recipes for preparing rabbit illustrate the differences among the Native American cultures: one from Colombia braises the legs and thighs in coconut milk, a Great Basin version uses herbs and peppers, and a Peruvian-style employs garlic and ginger. Rabbit may be easily obtained in many markets, but recipes calling for wild boar or wild goose may be more difficult to reproduce. As befits the region's reputation for sophisticated cooking, the book's most complex dish involves stewing pork in a green mole sauce typical of Oaxaca. This treatise will be a boon for teens studying Native American cultures as well as for anyone curious about this land's first foods. Mark KnoblauchCopyright © American Library Association. A high gloss, will put together a book of recipes. My chef daughter appreciated it as a collector of cookbooks.

It's a very pretty book but there are actually not very many recipes. I was hoping for more substance.

After my three-year journey through Latin America this book allows me to revisit many of the meals I enjoyed eating while there.

Full of great information and history. Great recipes ideas!

This is a wonderful book of native recipes and a lot of interesting stories to help you understand more about Native Americans.

This is a very interesting cook book that uses some very interesting things that are not very hard to get at your local supermarket !!!

When I travel to DC I make a point to eat at the Museum of the American Indian. This cookbook is what they use to make there great food. So, it is wonderful to have it at home especially since I do not always get to DC. Highly recommend.

While this is of course primarily a recipe book, it also contains fun little bits of information about the heritages and traditions of the peoples from which the recipes originated. I have yet to make a great number of the recipes in this book, but I can vouch for the deliciousness of the grape dumplings!

I purchased these flash cards for my 48 year old mentally challenged son. He loves them. He is mastering the words.

I bought these for my son who is about to start Kindergarten. I agree with some of the other reviews about having the second word at the bottom. It does confuse them a little. Also, I am not a fan of having the word levels so mixed up on the cards. For instance, one card has "ON" and "NUMBER" on the same card. It doesn't make it easy to sort through. I have to search and find the words that are on his level.

The front of the cars are great but its only about half the words. The rest are on the back, which would be fine, but they're generic, one color prints of the design on the fronts. Very disappointing. If they were all the nice bright colors, I wouldn't mind them being 2-sided.

GREAT FLASH CARDS FOR TEACHING CHILDREN THAT ARE LEARNING TO READ. MY GRANDSON LOVES THE CHALLENGE AND IS QUITE GOOD AT RECOGNIZING WORDS QUICKLY. HE HAS A LITTLE BROTHER THAT IS BEGGING HIS MOM TO TEACH HIM TO READ AND I THINK HE WILL BENEFIT GREATLY FROM THESE SIGHT WORDS.

Love these! I like to play the game train with my students and they have to say the word to stay in the front of the line. Before recessI would stand by the door and have the student tell me the word. If they got it, they got to go to recess. I would also carry them with me to the lunch room while my students were standing in line and we would practice the words.

Great words, but as much as I thought they were cute because of the characters on them, my kids say they are distracting (they would stair at the cards too long before trying to read the word because they were enjoying the pictures) so I bought another set of just plain white cards and black letter words, no other designs or colors, and my kids like them better for out sight word practice. ::shrug:: who knew?

Purchased these cards for my 5 year old to learn his sight words. Love how they are located on both sides for more use and practice

Pros:- Large print for easy reading- Colorful pictures- 100 cards = 200 wordsCons:- I just wish that they were a bit sturdier.
