There are lots of diets out there that cost money or that promise fantastic results in very little time. And there's ways of avoiding responsibility for your weight or losing weight by simply having your stomach stapled or some other sort of surgery that will change your life radically whether you like it or not. I've tried many of the diets around since the 1950s. I keep coming back to The Rice Diet. I have all the books on it, including the cook books. Anyone looking for a quick read or some kneejerk rationalizing by a nonprofessional in the weight loss field really needs to go elsewhere. For me, this is a superb book written from a patient, understanding perspective by a diet professional & her M.D. husband. I feel fortunate that I got the book when the rice diet house was still open, because I also ordered & got the complete set of audio CDs on the Rice Diet made by Mrs. Rosati & other diet professionals at the Rice House: Introductory Class; The Basics of the Diet: The Food; The Basics of the Diet: The Food, Part II; Dieta: A Way of Life; Binge Eating I; Binge Eating II. One has to be desperate to do the Rice Diet, in my opinion. I'm 70 & remain in excellent health (no prescriptions, no physical ailments), thanks to this book, this way of life. Those looking for an easier, softer way of losing weight will find most that are fast & easy aren't good for your health in the long run. Anyone looking for a book written by professional writers (I'm a professional writer, so know the difference) should look elsewhere. I look for honesty, clarity, & facts in books, not hip-slick-and-cool writing style, in a book that will teach me what I need to know to safely lose weight & correct any health issues. What you eat determines your weight & your physical condition, but try to convince the people who only want to eat what they like, not what is good for their bodies. The Rice Diet program presented in this book will work for you if you will follow the clear directions in it. It will not work for you if you "know better" & change it to fit your palate. If you know so much, how come you are looking for a diet book? I'm so pleased to see this wonderful book still in print & still available through Amazon, where I get all my books.

First-off, let me say that although the title of this diet sounds like a fad diet. It is anything but. It is based-on a doctor created diet from the early 1900's from a doctor affiliated with Duke University.It really is one of, if not THE first diet, and it works and offers major health benefits.I lost 30 pounds in the first month and a half of following this diet plan last summer. I also lowered my mild hypertension to a normal level...no meds.(I was glad about this because my BP had been steadily and slowly raising over the years, and I didn't want to end up on meds eventually). I really HAD to write this review because this diet is really the answer to diet prayers. You can drop massive amounts of weight quickly, safely, and steadily. Within the first two days, I had lost 7 pounds. Within a week, I had lost 12 pounds. After that, I steadily lost 1 pound a day. (The recommendation on this plan is to weigh yourself each morning, and on this diet, it was extremely motivating because of how well the weight wascoming off). Here is the caveat: To get these kinds of results you must follow the program to a "T". If you do, you literally will get on the scale each and every day and see a one pound weight loss--DAILY. However, just know that when you don't, your weight loss will slow, stop, or you will gain depending upon how far off the plan your eating was. Another plus? You don't have to do crazy workouts to get these results. All you need to do is walk, which is what I did. Now, I did eventually incorporate some strength training because I didn't want to get flabby, but there is norigorous exercise required to get TREMENDOUS results. ALSO, I really appreciated that after a while (maybe a week) this diet kills your appetite, so you no longer crave all the terrible foods that got you into trouble in the first place.I am writing this review as I prepare to do the diet again because in a year's time, my eating wasn't always the best, and I gained back 10 pounds. However, that was my fault, and the fact of the matter is that I still managed to keep off 20 pounds for a year. Now, my plan is to re-lose the 10pounds that I gained back and lose even more weight. I'm in my late 40's, but I'm going to try and get back to my high-school and/or college weight which is easily doable with this plan. Stop looking at other diets. This is the answer.One last point: this is called a diet, but it's really a life-style change. You do have to overhaul your diet. There really is nothing to keep you from success but yourself.

Regardlless of the author's claims that she worked with Kemper (creator of the original Duke University Rice Diet), the diet in this book bears no resemblance to what I remember reading in the 70s about the original diet. So, if you want to know about the original diet - the one that lowered blood pressure, reversed heart failure, etc - I'd suggest researching other publications.

Great book. My hubby and I have been on low carb for years -- and it works for him -- but not me. This works for me. I have lost 10 pounds this last month. This is much more healthy for me and I don't get hungry and get cravings when I follow it. It is also easily adjustable for eating out -- which we do quite often. This will be a life style for me.

The Rice Diet really, really works if you do it just like this book says. I lost 9 pounds in 10 days and didn't gain it back when I changed back to a regular healthy diet (note: I wasn't going back to junk or processed food, just real whole food that wasn't ultra-low-fat). My problem is I can't stick with the ultra-low fat. I start to get cravings and then I start over-eating some of the tastier allowed low-fat rice diet foods I love, like raisins.This book is good and provides a simple how-to framework that isn't as restrictive as the name of the diet implies. That is, it's not all about rice. The primary strategy you're following is eating healthy starchy carbs with no fat + very little sodium. It's pretty simple and this book will tell you how to do it.

This is a great book and the diet really WORKS!! If you want to lose weight and gain your life back, buy this book and do what it says! The first week I lost 11 pounds. The food is delicious and very satisfying. The first week is the hardest because you have very small portions of food, but its it's doable! Great book for food addicts!
