A character study into why we scream at our televisions and decorate our bodies ... all in the name of sport. The expert insight alone serves as free therapy for understanding why we care so much. It's just a game, after all. Right? Then why, every four years, am I glued to the television watching curling at one in the morning, re-learning the rules and jumping out of my seat when I see a double takeout hit and roll for five in the eighth end?! There just is not enough time in my life to be a fan for as many teams in as many sports as I am. Do you know someone like this? Do you live with someone like this? It doesn't even have to be about sports. You can be mad for politics or singing or food. There's a competition in everything. We're not sick. We're just like you.

This is a thoughtful and well-written book that explores how and why people become obsessed with their favorite teams. I have always wondered what was behind the allegiance that the painted, costumed, and banana-ed fans, and this book goes into some of the brain science and psychology of those decisions. The section on "scorned fans" is particularly interesting (and scary). But overall, there is much insight and hopefulness in the connections he explores. Definitely worth a read for even a casual sports fan.

Dohrmann does an excellent job of introducing us to both the types of people that support our favorite teams and what drives them. I'm an avid sports fan that faces the occasional eye rolls from my wife questioning my sanity for being so involved. I gave the book to her after I finished. She has only read a few chapters so far, but I sense her view of sports and fandom has already started to shift. I don't see her ever paining her face, but I could see her as more supportive of my fandom and encouraging of passing it on to our children.

After reading Play Their Hearts Out, I could not wait until Dorhmann’s next book came out - and Superfans does not disappoint! Dorhmann offers insight into the minds of all kinds of sports fans. As an American living in Mexico City, it is really interesting to see both the differences and similarities of how fans respond to both US based sports (NFL and NBA) as well as La Liga. This book allows me to understand why we all care so much about sports.

Excellent work. A book about fans for fans. He is able to tell stories through average people, and he tells it well. Real journalism.

Bought this book for my 12yo sports fanatic of a son. He's not much of a reader, but he really loved the stories of the other fans. Maybe it will give him some insights into his own psyche. A great book for teenagers who love sports.

Being married to a New England sports fan who really gets into his games I had hoped this book would give me a little insight into his behavior and that of those 'superfans' dressed up in costumes at football games. I'd really probably give this book a 3.5 if I could; the writing is excellent but the content fell a little short for me. I was hoping for much more insight into the minds of the obsessed and apparently the science and studies really aren't there. This was shocking to me as sports in this world -- not just in America -- are billion-dollar industries. In our commercially-driven, financially-focused world I find it hard to believe that organizations such as the NFL wouldn't want studies done to find out what drives their fans so as to milk more money out of them. (Hey, call me cynical but you know deep down it's true.) I found some of the personal stories of the fans included here to be sort of inspiring and others to be more than a little depressing; the contrast between what drives these people was really interesting to see though often you felt like the surface was just being scratched with some of the more obsessive fans. Seeing as how the author is from the Pacific Northwest there is a little more time spent on fans in this area, particularly the Portland Timbers, but is certainly not exclusively focused on this region. If you're interested in what makes some fans tick I think this book offers great glimpses into fans' lives and motivations while providing some tie-ins to the studies done to provide more awareness of why our crazy fans do what they do.

SUPERFANS: INTO THE HEART OF OBSESSIVE SPORTS FANDOM is a highly readable, often amusing book that takes a moderately serious look at obsessive sports fan behavior and what motivates that behavior. There are interviews with some famous fans (e.g., Nevets of the Timbers Army; Michael Hopson for the Colts; banana-shirted Teddy Kervin for the Brewers) that show they’re basically normal people, except for when they’re doing their fan thing. As an obsessive Golden State Warriors fan (scoring “extreme identification” on a quiz in chapter 3), I particularly enjoyed the chapter 11 discussion of Oklahoma City Thunder fans’ reaction to the departure of Kevin Durant in July 2016. Apparently the negative Yelp reviews of Kd’s restaurant, and the modification of Durant’s number 35 jersey to read “Cupcake” on the back, were examples of what some psychologists call “blasting”. Blasting--publicly stating negative things about specific players or rival teams-- simply makes disappointed fans feel better. One anecdote that particularly amused me came at the end of that same chapter, which also discusses negative fan reactions to reporters who write articles perceived by the fans as “biased”. As the author writes, Fox announcer Joe Buck “has been accused of bias by so many fans of so many teams that his Twitter bio playfully states: ‘I love all teams EXCEPT yours’.”
