I’ve enjoyed other LitRPG novels by Paul Bellow but Core Punk (Chronicles of the Core Book 1) is a totally original and wildly imaginative flip out. I’m not going to say too much as I don’t want to even hint at something that might spoil things. Go read the publisher’s blurb. All I will add is that Scout is great leading character and if you like that blurb you’ll love this book. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
The writing is extremely simplistic, few characters even have motivations (and none of them make sense or are explained), there are massive time skips where interesting things are supposed to happen(like an entire romance), and the world has no detail. Nothing in the book is given enough description. I only made it through the first half, but it consisted a great deal of the protagonist fighting mutants. The mutants aren't described at all. It just says, 'they shot the mutant'. Sometimes it will say the mutant had 4 arms, or was small, but that's the extent of the description. I never even learned if they were mutant people or mutant animals. Most of the setting is just people talking to each in a void, the setting is never described as more than 'The Shelter', which I gather is supposed to be some kind of fallout-style vault. The RPG aspect of the story feels like it was thrown in last minute, and has basically no impact on the book at all.
This novel delivered for me. I was expecting something quite different but it won me over nonetheless. LitRPG Elements are sprinkled along the way up until about the 70% mark then the increase is exponential. I can’t wait for book 2.
I read an advanced copy of this, and I loved it. Scout's a strong character, and I can't wait to see what she does next. I loved the base building elements and some of the other surprises. I'll definitely checking out the next book. Great read!
Great story with a different litrpg twist.
Great idea with good editing. The framework for a good book is here, but characters make choices only to drive forward a plot device, flesh out the next one. Reviewer JCs’ 1-star comments are all spot on.
This reads more like a very rough draft than a finished product. The world is interesting, but it is almost unreadable.
Hard to pick a comparable. Some base building. Some social networking, and some rpg elements. A bit dreamlike with the snatched off to a different game bit. Decent reading. Going to read the next one when it comes out.
