Wow! First person narrative of Billy Dixon who was there and was the most noted of the fighters at the Battle of Adobe Walls and the Buffalo Wallow fight. I have been to the site of the Adobe Walls battle and this book puts it all into perspective. If you care at all for Western history, this is a must read.
Very enjoyable reading for history "from the horse's mouth". Although showing frequent typographical errors, and not particularly sophisticated in style, this book appears genuinely written by a well-known character of the early West. The author appears somewhat humble, but also appears comfortably confident and thankful for his experiences. This appears to this reader to be an authentic story of early frontier life.
Well written and at times exciting. Good photographs also. Wm. Dixon, whom I never heard of before, was a heroic figure, yet humble. Some of the things he lived through were harrowing to say the least. He did win the Medal Of Honor as an Army Scout. I enjoyed this book. I think anyone who enjoys a look at the true Old West will love it.
With apologies to the "Little house on the Prairie " books, they're for girls.For boys and men, Mr William 'Billy' Dixon's Life as a 'Texas Frontiersman' is for us. He also received the Medal of Honor, as a Scout for the Army. He was a buffalo hunter, and a dead shot. Indian fighter. His is a tale of how the West Was Won, and describes the conflict of Civilized Western Lifestyle vs Hunter Gatherer Lifestyle and cruelties of the Indian battles and Wars. Their Brave Heroism was a successful part of the DNA in these men, 145 years ago.
I really enjoy reading first-hand accounts of the "old west". So much of what we have seen and read about the cowboys, pioneers, and natives is just plain "b.s." Billy Dixon was as real as it gets. History is best written by those who lived it.
If enjoyed Mr. Dixon's style of story-telling, written as if he were sitting in the room, recounting his adventures in the early days of the west. His humility and sincerity add to the color of his fast, incredible life during those wild days before civilization planted itself across the landscape.
I truly loved the story Billy Dixon imparts. Honest, straight forward, and cleanly told! What a read. Hope the next reader enjoys it as much as I did. Thank you Billy for telling your story of the west you knew so well
