When I saw that this story took place in 1900 Montana I almost missed out on a great story. On a lark I listened to the sample on the way to work. I couldn't wait until lunchtime so that I could purchase it and to continue reading. I've always enjoyed historical western romances, this book whichis part of a series of m/f romances, was a very pleasant surprise. It definitely does not need to be read after the other books in the series. It is a detailed story all within itself. Gay romance readers may be surprised to learn how similarly and differently gay men were treated in comparison to modern times.Being in the closet has been a necessity just as much then as some still believe they need to now. Also there are those heroic / foolish? men who never felt they should hid who they truly were. Inevitably these two polar opposites cross paths with either fiery or furtive results. The poignancy of these two men's emotions tugs at the readers heartstrings. The depth of love for friends and family is tested. Obstinacy and foolhardiness pepper this thoroughly told story.Doing what is right for you does not mean it is also applicable to others. Bravery can be demonstrated in a variety of ways. Using a woman as a beard has been a long time practice of some closeted men. This is a moving tale of friendship, lust, sacrifice, family, perceptions, existing vs. being happy, being seen as a "normal" man, wanting something seemingly impossible to obtain, being true to one's self and not being afraid to love.
I have enjoyed this series.Thanks for your amazing talent. Please continue this series, there are some characters who need a story told. The elderly need love also. Miss. Jones a shed brother Lewis and please get Delihlia and Paul together. Thanks for great reading.
Surprised I like this....wanted to read Phin's story after reading about the others of Cold Creek and I felt he needed love too. Well written but it is explicit so beware. To be fair the author did warn her readers of this. After a bit you forget they are of the same sex and just happy to see Phin find everlasting love. I'm a sap for happy endings. It's the only kind I read. :)

Okay, Merry Farmer, I have just finished reading your wonderful series, you ROCK, you're awesome, if anyone wants to to read books set in the old West, these are the ones that you need to read, the characters are so real and you get to be a part of their lives! On "A Hero's Heart", thank you, thank you for telling Lewis 's story, had to know how he made out!
Two men meet during a period of time when homosexuality is even less accepted than it is now. As a crisis in their town brings them closer together, they find a way to be together.
Love Miss Farmers books and this series so wanted to find out what happened to Phin. Story told well. I was impressed.
I didn't realize that this story was set in the 1900s and I wasn't sure this one was for me. Fortunately the author is a good storyteller and I was transported to another time. What bothered me was the stupid decisions made by law enforcement. Hard to let go.
