#18,893 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I've been studying this topic for more than twenty years. I have read pretty much every book on the topic. I've been waiting for an approach that addresses the complexity of the topic, and this is that book. The book reminds me of John Keel and Jacques Vallee's work. It is updated to include research from cognitive science, which actually is what Keel and Vallee were attempting but didn't have these tools back in the 70s and 80s.It is also written from the perspective of a person who obviously had a sixth sense in terms of meeting and understanding people who could help articulate the intricacies of the data.  It's a majestic and also a very fun read.I didn't know I would sail through the book so fast. I read it in an afternoon. I literally could not put it down.Highly recommended for everyone!

I’ll save you some time and simply incorporate by reference, other customer reviews here, which highlight many reasons why this is such an excellent book. Read the reviews by sneaky-sneaky, Patrick F. Gleason and Blair Kirkpatrick. Some of the people who would probably NOT like this book might be those who bristle at the notion of non-local consciousness, those who advocate hypnotism as the key to understanding claims of alien abduction and those who (for whatever reason) refuse to consider the topic of UFOs as anything other than a subject for ridicule.

This is a brilliant and much overdue analysis of the religious aspects of the UFO phenomenon, deftly connecting it with and beyond the current technological revolution. Yes, it opens more doors than it closes; but those doors are finally found to open into to a much larger, confoundingly strange Valhalla where boundaries between religion, myth, miracles, and consciousness are fluid. Professor Pasulka brings her academic prowess in analyzing Catholic hagiography to the often-dismissed UFO believer movement, keeping an open mind but critical eye on this nascent but technologically accelerated movement that parallels the rise of traditional religion, and may be a "scheduled reinforcement" of some unidentified (and unknowable) deeper religiosity. The sources are strong and impeccable: Carl Jung, John Mack, George Hansen and Jacques Vallee, of course, but also St. Teresa of Avila (bilocation from Spain to - yes - high strangeness New Mexico) and Andy Clark (extended mind), as well as personal revelations and encounters with modern enigmas (saints? prophets?) that are essential to providing an emotionally engaging and spiritually weighted personal narrative. More please!

This book was about a religious teacher who broadens her focus from Catholicism to include the paranormal or the phenomenon (UFO's, orbs, abductions, various sightings). She meets several cloak & dagger individuals who seem like demi-gods really, who live and interface differently (than most mere mortals might) with the Unexplained in efforts to figure things out. She takes us and her friends to places the public can't go, behind the scenes, and of course that's interesting. Along with her adventures, she adds her thoughts about formation of beliefs and religions as we develop alongside of technology, media, and modern ideas about the paranormal. I liked how the author talked through some common themes she identified with paranormal phenomena (which to me is similar to how we feel trying to figure out "God") and I won't spoil it for you by getting too far into those concepts. I'm not really sure what it would take for me to rate a book as 5 star. I appreciated and enjoyed this one --the author made careful efforts to explain terms some of us might not immediately get. Made for engaging weekend reading. I imagine I'll re-read it some day.

The ontological “reality” of the UFO phenomenon takes a backseat in this unusual study. Central to the author’s interest is the question of how beliefs about UFOs are shaped by a variety of forces: media, tv, movies, popular UFO books and culture, and other factors. The original experience of seeing a UFO or encountering apparent beings associated with such phenomena, undergoes, according to the author, a process of framing, in which the subject learns or chooses how to interpret such experiences. The author is a scholar of religion, who has taken an interest in UFOs as a religion in the making. She discovers similarities between the promulgation of the UFO mythos and those of the world’s dualistic and even non-dualistic religions. Her work is superb, and the thinking here on UFOs is on a much higher level than found in all but a few writers on the subject- only Jacques Vallee, Leslie Kean, and a number of others express the ambiguities and avoid the pitfalls of jumping to premature conclusions that are common in this area of study.I’m not certain the analogy to religion holds up as well as the author argues it does. Religion, to be a religion, must address two crucial problems: 1. The problem of death; and 2. The quest for wholeness - a way of confronting the brokenness and consequent evil of the human spirit. UFOs offer nothing that I can see in regard to either of these problems. Still, American Cosmic is an extremely valuable contribution to a field sorely in need of disciplined study.

I've read very few books through the years that made me stop and rethink my paradigms. This has become one of them. I found the section on non-local consciousness to be particularly fascinating as it reinforced beliefs I'd held for years. I also found the analysis of the development of religion to be interesting. My typical reading material is more focused on studies related to scientific research, but I can see myself delving into more books of this nature in the future. I enjoyed it and it made me think. Win-win.
