As one who is seriously considering the ketogenic diet to treat my daughter's epilepsy, I've been eagerly devouring any books even remotely related to the ketogenic diet. As the possibility of implementing the diet begins to loom, I finally ordered this book.To say it's disappointing is an understatement. I'm giving two stars only because, I suppose, if you *started* with this book, you might find it helpful. But I would not suggest starting here, nor would I suggest buying it at all.From the outset, I found it to be strangely organized. The first chapter is on holidays. Don't get me wrong: holidays are important and absolutely should be included in the book. But as the first chapter, before "Coping with the Diet"? No. I also found it to be badly edited.In addition, it was highly repetitive. I would read something and think, "Didn't she just say this a few pages ago?" It's a short book, with at least half devoted to recipes, so the repetition is especially odd and noticeable.With regards to her recipes, I didn't find them to be particularly helpful. She gives you a recipe, but doesn't *tell* you anything helpful about it--like the ratio--because she wants you to do the math yourself. I do not deny that learning to do the math on your own is important, but how are these recipes meant to be useful if you have to recalculate them all on your own?Finally, her suggested notes for caretakers, while basically helpful, are strange written. For instance, in the proposed note--which the author actually used--, "Grandma's instruction for a parents' weekend away," Grandma is instructed thusly: remove foil from frozen dinner, replace with plastic wrap, heat in microwave until warm. And: put a straw cut to 2/3 its original size into the cup of cream. I'm sorry, but is Grandma brain dead? If Grandma needs to be instructed how to use a microwave and toaster, then I would suggest she is not capable of caring for ANY child, let alone one on a special diet.I cannot recommend that anyone buy this book. I highly recommend "Fighting back with Fat" and "The Keto Cookbook." These books contain all the info that is to be found in "Keto Kid" (plus more!) they're arranged better, written better, and are FAR more helpful.

This book was very poorly made. The recipes all blend together and are lazily written. The pictures make the food look disgusting and the recipes aren't detailed enough for beginners.

The title of this book is completely misleading. It is NOT about supporting a Keto diet with your kids. Do not recommend this at all.

This book is an excellent resource for anyone preparing for, or going through, the diet. The author includes personal experience, resources, recipes, product suggestions, & diet tips. A must read for parents of "Keto Kids." It has been an invaluable resource for us and was very reassuring when we were preparing for the diet for our little one, and is still a great resource for us to get ideas and even a form of support from. So grateful she wrote about her family's experience!

This book is fantastic for parents with children on the ketogentic diet. I love the combination of fact, recipes and personal experience. I just marked 15 new recipes I want to try last night. So glad to have options other than those from the hospital. The author shares her own journals through their families journey. I have found these incredibly helpful as I go through many of the same thoughts, fears and experiences. Great to know someone has been there before me.

Since my 5 year old started the Keto diet I was anxious and nervous. This book is short and sweet. But best of all very informative in a plain English parent to parent setting. You receive good advice that makes sense and has actually helped me help my child transition from a no schedule almost no limit of food to a highly restricted diet.Highly recommend.

WOW!! I do not think that we would have been as successful if it wasn't for this book. My son was 3 when starting the Ketogenic Diet and this was a life saver...really. This is a MUST HAVE if you have a child starting keto.

First the good: This book is able to explain the key concepts in PHP and MySQL in a very simple, easy-to-understand manner. By following along with the example scripts, I imagine anyone could learn how to accomplish the most important tasks in building a decent backend for a website. I started the book with years of programming experience already in hand as well as some limited exposure to PHP and MySQL. In particular, I was looking for a book which would give me a more organized education on these two languages, especially relating to how the two work together in implementing a functional server-side system for dynamic web pages. It succeeded in this regard. Each chapter is organized so that you will have the requisite knowledge needed to understand the proceeding chapters. Furthermore, the review pages at the end of each chapter are quite useful in determining whether the information has actually been learned and highlighting gaps in knowledge that need to be filled before moving on.Next the not-so-good: One gripe I had with the structure of the book was the redundant code interspersed among the explanatory text, although this is more of a personal preference. Frames are placed separate from the main text with the actual script that the text is discussing; however, large pieces of this code are also copied into the text surrounded by instructions for recreating the script. I found this to be tedious and distracting, considering that the exact same code is already shown in the adjacent frames. It can be especially frustrating when the identical boilerplate HTML DOCTYPE and meta tags are repeated over and over for each script. This seems to just be page-filling material, but it gets annoying after the first few times. Disregarding these two tags, I can at least see how some of the redundant code could be useful for complete beginners of web development, so I didn't take any stars off for it. That said, I don't think it would be wise to learn PHP and MySQL before learning enough HTML and CSS to not need the repetition, anyway.Additionally, I'm a bit wary of how late in the book security measures are discussed. These days, security is incredibly important when writing a website backend, so I would have preferred if it was discussed in bits and pieces throughout the book and also explored in greater depth in a later chapter. At the very least, the sections with PHP code for handling HTML forms need to include proper character escaping of posted text, even if the reason behind it isn't explained in detail at the time. Unless someone only reads the first 12 chapters of the book before deciding to create a web server accessible from outside his or her LAN, this probably won't be much of a problem. Still, it's better to get beginners in the habit of using good security techniques from the start, rather than wait until later.Finally, the bad: The fourth (and, as of this review, current) edition of this book was published in 2012. Since then, HTML5, PHP 7, and MySQL 5.7 have been released, making this edition fairly outdated. Concerning HTML5 in particular, several instances of example HTML code shown in the book have been rendered obsolete, and in many cases are now considered bad practice. Ironically, the same boilerplate DOCTYPE and meta tag code that permeates book has either been simplified or completely thrown out of the HTML5 standard, perhaps explaining some of my frustration with it. I suspect another edition covering the newer versions is in the works, but then again, the author does write in the book that he "wouldn't be surprised if HTML5 is still not released by the time [he] starts the fifth edition of this book." In the meantime, I have to take off a star for the partially antiquated example scripts.Additionally, I have to take off another star for a potentially more limited problem. My printing of the book was missing approximately 50 pages from the end of Chapter 5 and the beginning of Chapter 6, which cover the Introduction to MySQL and Database Design. Instead, pages 151-198 have been replaced by a duplicate of pages 103-150. Again, the repetition in this book is killing me (joke). I have no idea how many copies were printed with this error, but for beginners, the missing pages contain some very important information on databases, MySQL data manipulation, and MySQL functions. At best, this error would require the reader to find this information elsewhere (or exchange/return the book); at worst, it demonstrates the poor quality control at Peachpit Press.Ultimately, I'd recommend this book, albeit to a small extent, for beginners of web development and programming in general. Although this book is far from perfect, it is one of the better available guides for those new to programming and backend development. For people like myself, who already have experience with programming, scripting, and/or web design, this book is better utilized as a supplement to other materials. All things considered, this book will provide a decent background into PHP and MySQL, but its use of outdated code, potential quality control issues, and lack of security measures in early chapters hinder its ability to serve as a singular, comprehensive source for getting started in dynamic website design.

A glaring editing problem is shown in the attached screenshots. This is in chapter 1, while discussing the fundamentals of how the language works. Whoever is in charge of preparing the electronic version of this book didn't bother to copy-edit it. The screenshot of the books are from the Kindle Cloud Reader and Peachpit's own "Web Edition" platform. So it's not a problem with Amazon or their reader. It appears Peachpit didn't bother to hand it to someone for checks even once before pushing the "publish" button on their website and Amazon. If they did have it checked by someone, that person should be fired because that person is not doing their job. A set of " , , , " should have jumped out at anyone performing a cursory review of the document.

If you want to learn how to develop dynamic web sites using PHP and MySQL (database) then this is an excellent first starter. I'm using my Java NetBeans IDE (integrated development environment) with PHP built in; however, you can use any editor and the author covers this well. The book, early on, will send you to the appendix where you'll learn how to install your web server, MySQL, Tomcat, and a mail server using XAMPP (I'd never heard of this before but it does install all). It also covers how to resolve issues such as having multiple 'running' copies of MySQL or code not running at all because the programmer place the code in the wrong location to be read by the browser.The book does have errors. Some of the errors (in code) were caught by the author and others and the errata sheet was updated. Some, however, have not. For example, the book shows a multiline comment as / some text /when in fact it should be /* and end with */. If you read his tips, you'll see the correct way (this is also how C++ does multiline commenting). In addition to downloading the errata sheet, you can download the code used in the book.While I haven't completed the book yet, what I have gone through is clear, concise and works. The tips are good ones (especially regarding commenting). I believe this to be a good book for beginners or anyone who wants to learn PHP and interface into the MySQL database. If you already have knowledge in other programming languages then you'll move along quicker.Nick.

Informative but depth of coverage is less than I expected. Although the man/info pages or program documentation is authoratative and a sometimes a moving target, there are some topics that are quickly glossed over. By no means a bad study resource but due to being "thin" in a few areas it shouldn't be your only or end all "go to".

Content is great and easy to understand. Kindle version has a few errors but overall its a great read. Writing my LPIC-2 in 2 months time.Would advice to use multiple materials along with book to aid some topics which are a bit shallow.

The book is excellent and very well explained.

I originally ordered this back in September, I must have received the first edition as it only covered the 201-400 and 202-400 exams. I returned it and reviewed it as outdated. I noticed another review that stated that it was for the new exam 4.5. I looked at the “Look inside” and saw the back cover it is in fact for the new exam. So I ordered this book again. I now have the correct copy. I have used both Christine Bresnahan's and Richard Blum's materials when I was preparing for and then passing the Linux+/LPIC-1 exams on the first attempt. Looking forward to using this study guide while working on LPIC-2 exams!

The searchable glossary is not available. I contacted technical support who stated "I do apologize but its not available at the moment as soon as the resources has been updated you will see the changes."The Wiley testbank is slow and confusing to navigate.

Aside from adding the term"micro-adventure" to my vocabulary and conciosness this book feels like a collection of blog posts and unnecessary photos. Unfortunately it was not worth the purchase price or the time it took to read through.Readers beware: it's extremely UK centric, so any suggestions at microadventure locations will prove useless.

Great book, very nice photos and easy to read. Broken down into small chapters it gives a good flow into what you can do with limited time and/or resources. I think the best thing about this book that people often miss is that he gives you ideas to change your perspective on what's around you. As others stated this book gives references to his experiences in Great Britain, which is where he resides, so that makes sense.However you can use the book for your own area and come up with ideas based on his or your own.Alastair seems to have genuine excitement for the outdoors and adventure be it small or large. Perspective, Perspective, Perspective.....

I loved this book and the way it changed how I look at "adventure".I've been fortunate to have traveled, backpacked, and hiked all over the world, all of which were big productions requiring major investments of time, money, and effort. Mr. Humphrey's lovely book has opened my eyes to the possibilities around me which, while not requiring the investments of my other adventures, are not diminished. I've had that same feelings of wonder and discovery on my micro-adventures as on my "macro-adventures" and it has added greatly to the quality of my life. I'm a working single mother, and time and money constraints can feel so limiting sometimes; by making the time and effort to fit wee adventures into my life at regular intervals, I've expanded my life.I highly recommend this book to everyone, and to those with younger children, I say, take them with you - teach them to approach the world with excitement and to create the space in their lives for adventure, discovery and delight.

Taking microadventures—adventures that last only a few hours to simple overnight trips close to home, will leave one fulfilled and satisfied. Some of my best days happen when I do something like this and later in the day to recline in the backyard with a book. I’ll have to adapt Humphreys ideas to the US, as some are practical only in the UK. I'd like to find a place where I can hike and wild camp overnight… ones that’s not too far away. I look forward to taking the 8 week challenge.

I loved it for all the reasons others have: the book is fun, it's inspiring, it gets my imagination going -- and maybe my courage too. I am edging up to an microadventure that intimidates me a little -- a solo kayak camping outing. One other thing I loved is that Humphreys is a terrific writer -- funny (at his own expense), often succinct, occasionally eloquent. To counter the criticism that this book is all UK-based, it's not the location of the author's microadventure that is important; it's the idea that each of us can make our own. So I've got to do my solo trip THIS YEAR!

I keep this book visible on the coffee table. It is inspirational. The idea that you don't have spend years risking your life to enjoy the outdoors in a lovely idea. Also you don't have to be the fastest, go the furthest or be the first one to do it to benefit from your adventures. The idea that with a little clever thinking you can be an adventurer is lovely. Alastair is ray of sunshine, a positive human that helps nudge you out the door. I have had many many conversations with people about the ideas in this book. Fun photos, great ideas, clear writing- that books is not a manual or "how- to" but a "why-do" book, a spark of inspiration.

I fell across a podcast with an interview with Alastair Humphreys. This was just at a time I was thinking about going on some "microadventures" (not knowing about the concept), heading out by myself to camp in the woods. I was really happy I heard about Alastair and the concept of microadventures. I got some very good information and it opened my eyes to using a bivvy instead of a tent (this was new to me) and I especially like the concept of packing light. The book was really inspiring and I have now been out on several occasions both close to were I live and also closer to my work (which is close to a beautiful national park which I have often thought about visiting but never gotten around to it) both by foot and with my mountain bike. With the light packing concepts I can fit everything I need into my new 32 liter backpack. Next week I am planning on taking some of my colleagues out on a 9-5 microadventure.I really recommend this book to everyone, it has some great ideas on how to get some adventure into your everyday life, getting closer to nature even if you live in a big city, even if you don't have much time or money.

I bought the book for my wife who loved it and then found some time to read it myself. The book really reminds you how much free time you have and what you can do with it. Your life is your own 16 hours of the day that you not at work and Humphreys gives you some fantastic ideas on how to fill that time with more adventure and less television.

Having come from no background or experience in alchemy whatsoever, my work on Fixed Stars Govern a Life: Decoding Sylvia Plath (out in Spring 2014, Stephen F. Austin State U. Press) immersed me in the world and I had a lot to learn fast. This book, along with Carl Jung's Psychology and Alchemy, were my bibles. A Dictionary of Alchemical Imagery takes a hard-to-grasp, weird world and simplifies alchemy in friendlier and even fun terms. I may not want to take up chemistry on the practical level, but it is understood that in this journey of life, the world would be a better place if we were all striving to turn lead to gold.

Fascinating. Probably the best book on alchemy out there.

I needed this for two term papers and my thesis. It's easy to use, VERY rich in definitions and examples and has a full bibliography in the back. Great, great compilation of alchemy.

THE ONLY THING ABOUT THE BOOK IS IT IS VERY ADVANCED AND USES TERMS THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND IF YOUR NEW TO ALCHEMY. HOWEVER THE BOOK IS INCREDIBLE THOURGH. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK TO USE IN COJUCTION WITH OTHER ALCHEMY BOOKS.THE PRICE MAY STOP SOME BUT IF NOT IT IS WORTH THE MONEY.

Given this as a gift a few years back, I had primarily asked for it with the intention of using it as an art sourcebook. For that purpose alone, a guide to decoding alchemical iconography, it would have been a worthy purchase. From an intellectual standpoint, however, this volume proved to be infinitely fascinating and well researched. The text itself is clearly written but very dense. It is clear that the author knows what she is talking about and has taken major steps to make a very complex subject understandable to others.An exciting, yet unexpected, byproduct of this book was that I began to recognize related iconography in places I previously hadn't been aware of it. Most notable of these "discoveries" was the recognization of alchemical imagery that infuses W.B. Yeat's poetry. This book was the means by which I discovered an entirely new (to me) dimension of Yeats' writing.If you have even the slightest interest in historical alchemical imagery and iconography then I highly recommend this volume. Not only is it an essential academic reference, but it serves as an excellent springboard into further historical study and investigation.

this book is fun, well written, and detailed. most useful for literary and artistic readings of alchemy, or "comparative religion" type studies, less so for detailed info on the protoscientific aspects (try Lawrence Principe). I'm using this book for a class on alchemy I'm teaching this semester. It's a good way to approach the rich terminology and symbolism, though it can get a bit repetetive as the same idea gets explained in different ways in different articles. Could have better footnotes and cross-referencing, but very useful for the casual reader or beginning student who is just becoming familiar with a confusing and difficult set of terms and images.

This is a superb book for anyone interested in alchemy. For those interested in alchemy and its connections to literature-- it's even better. The articles are bursting with relevant information and insight into this often perplexing subject matter in an accessible, readable style. A "must have" for anyone interested in alchemy. The only thing I don't like is the price, which may prove prohibitive for some.

This was great fun and a good read, except for some of the sex scenes with animals and people. I docked it a point because some of these (admittedly short) scenes were inappropriate, especially one toward the end with the old tiger. The book is written as an autobiography of the life of Mabel Stark, who, in the 1920's during the golden age of the big top, was the superstar of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Her story (told in the first person) is realistic and easy to follow. She had five husbands, and the first one (when she was still in her teens) had her committed to an abusive insane asylum because she could not handle his style of marital sex. Men had that kind of power back then. A kind doctor helped her to escape and she literally ran away to join the circus. A tiny Kentucky blonde in a white leather bodysuit, Mabel became the greatest tiger trainer in history. She was an innovator in care and training of the big cats, and it was amazing to read of how she persuaded them to do tricks nobody had ever seen big cats do before. The story also was very clear about how life was for circus people in the 20's and beyond. I learned a lot and it was a pretty easy read. It's not suitable for kids because of some bawdy parts.

Wow - I love historical fiction and novels such as this remind me why.Years ago when I reach my stress limit I would tell my now husband that I was going to runaway with a circus. After reading about the owners, performers and working men I realize I would never have what it takes but Mabel Stark sure did.Written as if the reader is listening to Ms. Stark tell them of her life made the book very personal. We learn about her successful career training and performing with tigers. Her relationships with one special tiger, Rajah, and 5 husbands. I dare say I believe she loved Rajah more than four of the men in her life. We also learn how even after being injured by her tigers she continued to love and work with them.I found this story of Ms. Stark's life, and the various circuses, tigers and men that shared it, to be a real page turner that didn't disappoint. Hope you will too.PLEASE NOTE: This book does contain some graphic sexual content so I wouldn't recommend it to younger readers or those that may be offended by such material.

It's a challenge for a novelist to write about an actual person. Hough did a pretty good job. Mabel's life, imagined and factual, was fascinating. Given her eccentricities and her rare talents, there was a lot of material here for an imaginative author. Hough takes a restrained approach while still creating for us a fascinating, difficult and empathetic character. The presentation of circus life in this novel is at the level of the high-lighted performers rather than the working stiffs as we encountered in Water for Elephants. By combining the information in both of these novels, the reader can get a good idea of the circuses of the first half of the 1900's. Just imagining the logistics of managing these huge enterprises is daunting in itself. Circuses played an important role in American life, and this novel allows us to glimpse that as well as experience Mabel Stark's life. Well done.

A Book Review of The Final Confession of Mabel Stark by Robert Hough, Grove Press Books, 2001, paperback p.430.This is one of those books that is plastered with quotes like "Great Storytelling!" and "Extravagantly Entertaining!" With its hodge-podge, yellow and red drawings of tigers in a ring with a wavy haired, female tiger-trainer...it was eye-catching enough to give it a chance. I was glad I did. This Final Confession frolics through an eye-opening, e, sometimes shocking, sometimes sad life, a life fully lived.Through research, writing skill and imaginative recreation of a colorful, explicit, no-holds-bared character, Mr. Hough revives Mabel Stark. He dives to the core of Mabel's being, let's her develop and tell her story as she wants. She meanders back and forth through time, from her childhood to the death of her parents, to various marriages, and to "the circus coming to town". Through the detailed description of animals, landscapes and various characters brought to life through "recollected" dialogue, we traveled back and forth across America and through the first half of the twentieth century.It is one of those stories I don't want to tell much about, as the unfolding and the surprises, in spite of much foreshadowing, were phenomenal. Mabel, the most famous female tiger-trainer in history, was quite an animal, herself. She experienced life without much pretense, was straight-forward and seemed to embody a tiger's spirit. If a tiger could talk...what would she say? Well, I guess Mabel does tell us that, and much, much more, in her last confession.

If you like circus, you'll love this. Mabel Stark is a Circus Star of the highest order. You'll get to know her, her life, and her loves. Rajesh should have had a dressing room with a star too, perhaps, but you'll know why after reading this intimate portrayal of their lives. Enjoy!

so pleased to find out that Mabel Stark was a real person, fictionalized, of course. enjoyed reading the book and even those parts that wereprobably made up, like having sex with her tiger. yes, i can see that happening because of her relationship with her tiger. her life seemed thatit would probably be very colorful and i really did enjoy reading the book. Mr. Hough certainly let his imagination run free and Mabel would bevery pleased if her life could have been so colorful.

There isn't an option for six stars. Which I happily would have done. I loved this book. The author is absolutely brilliant. You could smell, taste, and feel the circus and the times. If Mabel were still around she'd stand up and cheer. This writer has an uncanny gift. The gift of presence, character, atmosphere, humor, horror, and absolute intelligence. Even pathos. I read this book as fast as I could. Anyone else who will, do the same.
