This book/booklet provided answers to just about all the questions, facts & myths surrounding insects/bugs/plants that cause an itching reaction to exposure/contact with them. The author is thorough, but keeps it simple using laymen's terminology that everyone can understand.The book also provides some very good information on cures and palliative treatments that can give relief to those of us who have unfortunate encounters with the things that cause itching/pain. And, it reveals old myths and time worn disinformation that you've heard from your parents, grandparents etc. that are blatantly wrong. It gives you the "Dos" and "Dont's" of treatment for various sources of itchyness. It can save you added discomfort by pointing out those "Old wives tales" treatments that actually make things WORSE!This is a great learning tool and reference source to have handy...especially after having an unfortunate "close encounter" with those creatures & flora that are the source of bothersome, itchy and/or painful irritation. And, depending on how fast a reader you are, the entire book can be read in 15 to 30 minutes. (It will take longer if you're under the age of 13 or are dyslexic.)

This book was fascinating and entertaining at the same time. Not only are the illustrations amusing, the text is written so that children (and adults!) can read the stories behind itches while learning about fungus, and fleas, nettles and caterpillars, and those pesky bedbugs. The beauty of this book is that it covers history (Salem witches, bugs in the trenches in WWI), science (mosquitoes and carbon dioxide), health (Is there anything good about itching?) and weird events (flea circus, prickly pears take over Australia!). I promise you will read it with a smile, and if you find yourself scratching, the author will tell you why!

Love this duo - Anita Sanchez takes a lively look at all the things that make us itch. The illustrations are fun and kid-friendly. This is a great title for reluctant readers and budding doctors and naturalists. Add it to your shelf!

This book is full of proverbs.Each proverb gives the way it is pronounced in Jamaica, how it translates into English, discusses what the proverb means, and it gives suggestions for carrying out the proverb in one's life.The proverbs are similar to some common sayings I've heard and proverbs I've never heard before.If you like reading about other cultures, proverbs and wise sayings, then you will like this book.It would make a good discussion book for a group studying the book of Proverbs from the Bible using it for a comparison/contrast type of study.

Very intersting seeing the Jamaican language and lesson perspective, along with the English translation.

This is a uniquely charming book that shares some truly valuable wisdom. These Jamaican proverbs are so insightful and beautifully presented, including an action step. They are beyond practical and while I am not Jamaican, I can easily imagine the wise grandparents sharing these pearls of wisdom with the younger generation as my Greek grandmother did the same thing when I was a little girl. You will thoroughly enjoy this read and get much value from it.

This excellent book of Jamaican proverbs reminds me of my mother's words of wisdom. No matter what your cultural background, you will be enriched. Simply written and well edited, it was worth the price. Purchase several and give as gifts.

As this was my first exposure to Jamaican proverbs, I enjoyed reading this book. Reading the phonetic pronunciation was a fun exercise; it made it easier for me to imagine being on the island, and having a Jamaican grandfather or grandmother sharing their wisdom with me.The proverbs are short, and cover a broad range of topics from avoiding conflict, to saving money, to measuring others by their character rather than their outward appearance. The action steps made it easy to see how to apply the lesson of each proverb in my life. I highly recommend Wisdom From Ole Time Jamaican People to people interested in learning age-old lessons in a way that is both delightfully unique and uniquely delightful.

I have long desired this set of books, but could never make room in my budget for the money. I finally was able to buy a used set for around 135 and I was beyond excited to receive them. They weren't the nicest looking things but I cared more for their content then the fact that they were old. I have started reading the first one and cannot speak highly enough for it. I wish this book set was recruited reading for every student as I know I would have loved to known all of this back in school. I also find it well worth the prices as instead of buying many different books about different periods in history, I can have this collection that covers it all. Any history lover or bookworm will not regret purchasing this.

Let's face it, just about anything by Will Durant rates five stars with me, but this is a particularly delightful romp through European history. A bit shorter than some of the other volumes in this series, it still has considerable heft, and Durant's penchant for not slighting intellectual and cultural history in favor of political and military history is one of the chief aspects of his books that rescues them from academic dreariness...that and his colorful, witty writing style. Above all, Durant is not interested in institutions, organizations, structures, and other such abstract invitations to dullness; he is interested in people, and every major figure in history has a story to tell. His histories are basically composite biographies of the leading individuals of the periods he covers, and they are superb portraits of distinct eras of western civilization. I highly recommend this book even if you don't care to read all the books in the series or read them in order. A great read!

Durants’ book is a classic. While modern research may indeed disagree with some of the content (modern research as a rule always disagrees with the previous viewpoints), it is irrelevant. Durants’ book is a more than just a collection of facts and viewpoints. Like Gibbon’s book it is more than history. First of all it is a grand perspective on humanity. It also a philosophy and it is literature. It belongs with the world’s wisdom tradition – it enlightens the mind and heart - very few books in the world's history can be ranked that high. And finally this book is a pleasure to read.

I read the full set of Will & Ariel Durant's books when in the university 50 years ago. I did not have time to fully enjoy them. Reading it on my I Pad is a lot more enjoyable and not so heavy. The book, and content, is really timely to explain the basis of today's unstable world. Basically, things never change. Not always the happiest reading but at least one understands where other cultures, and current conflicts come from. This is the first book and a MUST READ!

I've always loved this series and have found a few of the books at garage sales and used book stores. I'm happy to begin collecting the Kindle versionsAs others have noted, the writing style is dated. Originally published in 1935, some of the terms Durant uses are cringe-worthy and much of the language is archaic. As much a book about history, this book/series is history itself.The Durants are attempting the impossible: The Story of Civilization. I'm not a historian so I can't speak to the academic quality of Durant's writing; I don't know what he left-out or glossed-over. In the 100 years-or-so since he began researching and writing this book many of our interpretations and pool of knowledge has changed. But the attempt is gorgeous; the prose is beautiful. It's an enjoyable book to read and should be part of everyone's library.

This, like all of Will (and, in later volumes, his wife Ariel) Durant's THE STORY OF CIVILIZATION, is a delightful read, much easier to absorb that the volume's daunting thickness might lead you to expect. This is no dry historical tome, but a fascinating -- and surprisingly breezy -- survey of history. The breadth and scope of the Durants' vision is amazing.I have one problem that I cannot address anywhere else, and I'm hoping someone who reads this may have a suggestion for me. I have both the text and Audible versions of OUR ORIENTAL HERITAGE, but I am unable to download the Audible version to my iPhone (as I have been able to do with other Kindle books) -- therefore, I am unable to listen to the Audible version on my iPhone the way I can on Kindle. As I said, with other books where I own both print and Audible, I have been able to switch from reading to listening at will, but not with this one. Any suggestions for remedying would be greatly appreciated.Meanwhile, despite that inconvenience, I recommend this volume -- and by extension every subsequent one in the series -- without reservation. This is truly one of the towering achievements of historical writing. Not only that, it's FUN!

Although I have only read a sample and the first chapter of this book so far, I deeply appreciate the HUGE amount of work the authors have done. Not only have they pulled together primary and secondary reports from the earliest days of geology and paleontology, works that most of us would never have access to, they also quote extensively from these sources so we can "hear" what the early geologists and paleontologists had to say about their fossil finds, the circumstances under which they were found, and the geology of the strata in which they were found. The authors lay out not only reports on the original finds but also subsequent reports supporting or not supporting the conclusions drawn from these finds. I've been wanting to read the original reports (rather than condensed and heavily edited versions) for quite some time and didn't know how to find them. I for one thank the authors for doing this for me.

Do you like Weird Science? This book, almost 1000 pages, has a lot of it. I bought a library-released hardcover in perfect condition, and it's worth a look.There is ample evidence of a 10,000+ yr. old fairly high tech civilization before the last ice age. They had crude 'computers' (more like the very first calculators, but slower), agriculture advanced past today in some ways, significant seafaring ability, map making skill, astronomy carried to levels past Renaissance levels, and critically the ability to accurately tell time. We are just now looking at places like Gobekli Tepe. There may enough clues to solve this mystery.Then there's this book. It's a collection of way out-there stuff, such as unbreakable spheres dug out of billion year old solid rock. Fun to read, and some of it is likely even true. People tend to discount the edges, so push those edges WAY out there and look at it all. I do.

At first I thought the authors would provide an objective, scientific evaluation of archaeology findings. They punish the reader with extraneous observation by archaeologists from the 1800's and early 1900's whose ideas have been ignored by the scientific community. They then suggest how each supports their theories. Other reviewers have suggested they look for studies that support their Hindu beliefs. Recent discoveries do support humans emerging perhaps 2 million years ago but the authors wish to go back further. Frankly I'm lost in the presentation of details in this book. It is not organized well and fails to make a pragmatic logic for their views. This overwhelming presentation presents some ideas but fails to prove its theme.

I found it to be a really interesting read. Within what has been found along with his theories, he does a good job giving the information that scientist on the other side of man's history have to offer. He can kind of get a little drawn out on the information, but is definitely a book worth reading.

I really liked this book. The information was great, but I was more impressed by the extensive amount of research done, especially since the authors clearly went out of their way to do their homework.I find that most people who dismiss this book are not because the documentation isn't sound or the conclusion isn't logical. Instead, it's because they don't like the conclusion or dismiss it out of hand because of the writers' beliefs. However, the writers address that very issue in the introduction.If you're looking for a clearly-written book resting on sound documentation relying on source material written by professional archaeologists, pick up this book. If the size intimidates you, read the condensed version, The Hidden History of the Human Race instead.

Interesting, well documented, 800 pages long, still working my way through it.

I was expecting the full Michael Cremo book but this shorter version covers enough show the crazy timelines in books trying to push Darwin ane missing many points and discoveries everyone should know about.... If you only know what they teach in school.... this is a nice brain upgrade to look beyond just that evolution theory 101. (man was around a very long time and did not climb out of the woods and build pyramids)

As an engineering student that is minoring in anthropology, I actually read the whole book to get an insight into our human history. I found the book interesting and I believe one definitely has to keep an open mind as to what the truth is, pertaining to our origins. I thought the authors presented their information in an orderly manner, and the did their best to explain the logic behind their theories, which made sense to me since I had taken archeology classes. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand the topic from a different perspective, although it might not really be possible to get to the truth, because of the way or scientific system is set up, I believe any reasonable person can see that not all of the situations covered by the authors can simple be written off as coincidences. I actually used the book to write an essay for one of my archeology classes and got an -A- since I guess some of the topics covered could not be disproven. Overall if you have an open mind and are willing to put in the time this is a great book to read.

I've followed Prudence's work for a while and love this book. It's endearing, easy for anyone to relate to, and chocked full of light-hearted illustrations and unrestricted humor. Comic strip Prudence and the real Prudence are the sort of person you would want to be friends with.

Just received today and love it! I’ve followed Planet Prudence in Instagram for the past year. She is relatable and funny. Love her drawings - talented and fun. You don’t have to be a millennial to enjoy her work - I am well into the third stage of my life and look forward to what she puts out there. Love her 1st book it won’t disappoint!

This is a quickly read book, and probably one quickly forgotten, but entertaining while it lasts. Most of these short pieces are similar in theme and tone: amusing, somewhat silly takes on how humans would interact with aliens or intelligent machinery once either became commonplace. This is not the book to search for my favorite aspects of Scalzi's novels, namely the resourcefulness and individuality of his characters and the suddenly piercing pathos their stories can evoke.The book ends with a poem, neither amusing nor SF, and a rather impressive one.

John Scalzi keeps the introduction and the stories short in this collection of 17 2000-words-or-less stories (and one poem). He learned to write short articles under time pressure for a newspaper—and developed a style that was “…fast, punchy, and to the point.” He believes it to be one of his natural formats—along with the full-length novel, of course.Your taste may vary, but here are a few that stood out to me as I sprinted through them:“Alien Animal Encounters” is Scalzi’s first published story consisting of short interviews collected by a reporter from ordinary humans who own extraordinary pets.“Pluto Tells All” was written after that ex-planet was stripped of its status in 2006. Pluto comes across as gossipy, defensive, and a little bitter. Credible.“When the Yogurt Took Over” is about our favorite healthy breakfast dominating the home world. Guess those dieters weren’t eating it fast enough.“Important Holidays on Gronghu” is a memo to employees of Earth’s embassy with guidance about how to and how not to celebrate various Earth and Gronghuan holidays. It does a nice job of profiling an alien culture indirectly.The stories entertain and amuse, but lack the punch I expect from good flash fiction. As a collection, they show the author’s background in news writing. Most are in the form of actual brief documents such as news articles, memos, interview transcripts and the like. One might tire of this format if there were twice as many stories or the ones here were twice as long.Oh, and the poem just doesn’t work for me. Sorry.

John Scalzi is hilarious. So many authors try to write "humor" but the vast majority of them utterly fail at, or only accomplish being amusing as opposed to laugh-out-loud funny. I think it's because being funny in book form requires a different strategy than oral or physical timing. You really have to be able to get inside your readers' heads since you don't have the feedback of a live audience to hand you clues, and it requires a different sense of timing. Language is important, as is testing your readers' suspension of disbelief. It's always funnier when the alien is the straight man and the humans are the ones forking everything up, as per usual.I've read two of Scalzi's books at this point and loved them both. I've been meaning to get my hands on more for a while, so when I saw he had a short story collection on Netgalley, I was very excited to be an advance reader & eagerly applied.It's worth noting that many of these stories are older, and several were previously published in other places, like special editions of other books, or in one case, a web article on "America Online" (that one was from the 90s, you guys). It's kind of cool to see how his humor evolved over the years, becoming wilder and more sophisticated all at the same time.So, without further ado, he's a breakdown:Alien Animal Encounters: ☆☆☆☆☆This story is told radio-host style and involves "interviews" with several beings on Earth over their encounters with xenobiology. It's quite funny, because everything sounds so plausible! There's a twist ending that will have you shaking your head and going, "Oh, humans!"Missives from Possible Futures #1: Alternate History Search Results: ☆☆☆☆Imagine a Google-like search engine that specializes in performing web searches across the multiverses. That's what Multiversity is (for a package deal of only $59.99)! Want to see how it works? Just type in something - say, the Death of Hitler - and see how various events caused the timelines in other universes to diverge from the one we know and love so well.Pluto Tells All: ☆☆☆½I wasn't really sure about this one, at first. It's a "Behind the Music" expose about Pluto's life after it was demoted from its planet-status. (Spoiler: Mercury is a flake.) Very strange, but ended up amusing me in the end. Takes many, many cheap shots at Phil Collins.Denise Jones, Superbooker: ☆☆☆☆☆Answers the question, what if superheroes had superbookers to hook them up with jobs? (If you've seen Mystery Men, you already have an idea of what that's like, but let's pretend for the sake of science that you haven't - and if you haven't, check it out from Netflix. You'll thank me.) Denise Jones is written in interview format and is an excellent satire of superhero cliches and tropes.When the Yogurt Took Over: ☆☆☆☆☆Exactly what it sounds like. Seems ridiculous at first, but roll with it. Reminiscent of Douglas Adams.The Other Large Thing: ☆☆☆This story is difficult to explain without giving away the plot twist that makes it. You'll spend the first part of the story very confused and wondering what is going on, but then it will all make sense.The State of Super Villainy: ☆☆☆☆☆This is a follow-up to Dense Jones, Superbooker, and is written in the same format, only it's about a "Supervillain Analyst" instead of a Superbooker. A fascinating look at the risk assessment behind super villainy. It's free verse and - well, strange. I did not like this much, and it didn't really fit well with the collection (neither did Cute Adorable Extortionists, now that I think about it, although at least that was a short story and somewhat bizarro).I highly recommend this collection, especially if you're a fan of Futurama, Twilight Zone, or Star Trek. This is stunning. This is the first time I have not been wildly enthusiastic about a Scalzi book! Don't get me wrong: the book is good. I think I may be influenced by the caliber of other of Scalzi's works, and since this one was not stunning, it left me a little flat. Or, maybe, it's because it is largely a humorous work and the humor didn't catch my funny bone.In any case, the book is worth reading (and a fast read, indeed), and you won't have wasted your money.

I really enjoy the short fiction of John Scalzi. He has a great sense of humor and an addictive writing style. He seems to have no shortage of ideas, either. I would also recommend the audible version of this book as the delivery was done with humor and aplomb. Even though this is a very short collection as the title suggests I could see myself coming back and re-reading it in the near future. To me this is always a sign of a good book. Well done, John Scalzi, l I hope to see more collections from you in the future. Highly recommended.

Scalzi is a very funny writer. Although the quality of the pieces vary, none was terrible and most were very good. They're all short enough to read in a not-too-long sitting and most will evince a chuckle or two, some an out loud laugh. They're true to human nature and may be the science fiction equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse.

A very short collection of very short stories. I like this authors books and his writing in general but this wasn't really enough material or enough quality to sell. I ended up feeling a little cheated. Or cheap. Or dirty. Hmm, I need a shower. Don't buy.

Mr. Scalzi published an enjoyable collection of very short stories, most of which gave me a good chuckle. That is until until I saw the poem as the last essay - lose the poem.
